Here are some steps to help you make the right choices. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Dressing For Your Family Portrait

    1

Ask your photographer, when you are making the appointment for the portrait, what color background he will be using if any. If he will be photographing your family in front of a backdrop you'll want to stay clear of wearing that color so that you stand out and not blend in.

    2

If you have a dark complexion you'll want to stay away from white and other very light colors. If you don't, your clothes will end up looking washed out and your faces will be too dark. It's better not to go with such a high contrast between your clothes and your skin.

    3

Choose similar colors for the entire group. Sometimes colors can clash and there is more likelihood of this occurring if everyone is wearing something completely different.

    4

Stay away from wild colors and patterns as these can be distracting. When people look at the photo you want the first thing they see to be your smiling faces and not the striped polka dotted shirt you wore.

    5

Pick a standard safe color that your whole family will be comfortable wearing. The more comfortable you are the more relaxed and natural you will all look. Suggested colors are blues, greens, mild purples and reds.
