Games, Activities & Lessons for Teaching Kids to Be Trustworthy

Games, Activities & Lessons for Teaching Kids to Be Trustworthy

Honesty is the best policy for children of any age, but raising trustworthy kids requires proactive parenting. As they evolve from preschool to high school, so will the temptations, be they broken vases or broken curfews. An excellent way to teach kids about trust and integrity is through games and lessons. Your school and church may already do this in the classroom. If not, many of these activities can be performed at home.

Talking to Your Kids

A casual sit-down discussion with your child can be an effective way to assess and possibly improve his honesty. Ask some hypothetical questions. For instance, ask how he feels when someone tells him a lie. Ask if lying can ruin a friendship, and to consider whether a single lie makes you a liar, or if it requires multiple lies. Also, talk about what it means to be trustworthy. For instance, ask what forms of behavior define a trustworthy individual. This line of questioning will work better with younger children. Teenagers usually have enough street smarts to give the answers that you want to hear. In their case, be sure to praise them effusively for showing integrity in difficult situations.

"The Consequence Game"

One classic game for teaching kids to do the right thing is "The Consequence Game." It requires nothing more than a set of flash cards. For one side of the index card, write down two alternative courses of action. On the other, note the consequences of each choice. For instance, invent a situation where a clerk at a candy store gives your child $10 in change by mistake. Your kid can either keep it or give it back. Let your child pick a response. Then, describe the consequences. Keeping the money makes him feel guilty about the clerk's lost wages. Giving it back instills a sense of pride.

"Cat and Mouse"

In this game, one child is a cat. The other is a mouse. Both get blindfolded. A third party directs the mouse through a maze with audio signals. Sounds are matched to specific directions before the start of the game. For instance, a whistle means stop and a hand-clap signifies a right turn. The playing field is marked as well as the mouse hole. The object is to get the mouse to safety before the cat gets her. Besides providing entertainment, the game illustrates the importance of blind faith in dangerous situations.

Other Activities

There are many other activities to help build trust among kids. They usually require two or more participants. In "Mine Field," objects are scattered in an indoor or outdoor area. In pairs, one child verbally guides his blindfolded partner through the minefield to safety. The classic "Trust Fall" has been used successfully in groups of all ages. In this activity, a person intentionally falls backwards off a table into the arms and hands of the group. Each member of the group takes a turn as the faller. Other activities increase trust through physical and visual contact, such as looking into someone's eyes for 60 seconds or holding their hand for an extended period.

How to Organize a Family Feud Game

Family Feud is a fun family game that has been around for a long time. It is played by two opposing family teams who come together to "feud." The family that racks up the most points by providing the top answers to survey questions walks away with the prize.

Instructions

    1

Think of survey questions to be asked during your Family Feud game. You can find sample questions that you can use online (see Resources).

    2

Find a bell or buzzer that can be used for the game. You will also need a stopwatch or timer to ensure that all questions are answered within the allotted time frame.

    3

Choose a game host who will be responsible for asking questions and checking answers. You can choose someone else to run the stopwatch and keep score.

    4

Decide who will participate on the two family teams and give each team a family name (the Smiths, the Wilsons, for example). The original "Family Feud" game on TV had five players per team, but it's not necessary. Just make the teams equal in number.

    5

Choose the family leader for each team. The family leader is responsible for providing the final answer for her family after the opposing team has "struck out."

    6

Determine the number of rounds you'll have. Choose an odd number of rounds to avoid a tie: The team that wins the most rounds wins the game.

    7

Find a prize for the winning team. It should be something that can be split or shared among all team members, such movie tickets, cake, key chains or T-shirts.

    Easter Party Games for Adults

When choosing games for an Easter party for adults, you can either look back to your childhood for ideas or choose games you have played at other events and add an Easter theme to the game. The games can be simple ones that can be played as an ice breaker, such as a game of bingo. They can also be competitive games played by either individuals or teams. When awarding prizes for Easter party games, choose Easter-themed prizes such as candy or Easter baskets filled with a variety of items. Does this Spark an idea?

    Easter Egg Bocce Ball

Dye eight Easter eggs, with two sets of four that are the same color. Use one regular hard-boiled egg that has not been dyed as part of the game as well. Choose one of the two players to toss the plain egg into the center of a grassy playing area. The two players then alternate turns trying to toss one of their four eggs of the same color closest to the plain targeted egg. After both players have tossed all four eggs, award a point to the player that is closest to the targeted egg. If a player has one of her eggs touching the targeted egg it is worth two points. The first player to 11 points wins the game.

    Egg Toss

For the Egg Toss, you can hard-boil the eggs and dye them if you wish--the game is messier and more entertaining if you use raw eggs. Have players pair up in teams of two, and start the game with the players on each team standing 2 feet away from their partners. Give one player on each team an egg. When the referee blows a whistle, each team must toss an egg from one player to the other. If the egg hits the ground or if the egg breaks, that team is eliminated. The players on each of the remaining teams must take one step backward. Blow the whistle again, and continue until only one team is remaining.

    Flashlight Egg Hunt

Search for eggs using flashlights. Before your guests arrive, hide eggs outdoors in the yard. Make sure you write down where they are, as they will be hard to find at the end of the game without a list. Wait until it becomes dark outside. Give each player or team a flashlight to use. Give the teams or individuals up to 30 minutes to find the eggs. The winner can be determined by who finds the most eggs, or you can assign points to eggs depending on how hard they are to find, with the player or team scoring the most points winning.

    Easter Bingo

As your guests arrive at your Easter party, give each guest a blank five-by-five grid and a list of Easter themed words. Ask each of your guests to choose 25 different words and fill in their bingo cards using those words. This can give your guests something to do while waiting for everyone to arrive at the party. Once everyone has filled out their grids, start calling off words at random from the list you supplied. The first player to have five spaces on his bingo grid marked off in a row is the winner. Award the winner an Easter-themed door prize.

How to Design a Vegetable Garden Layout

Learn how to design your own vegetable garden before you start planting seeds. The first step is deciding where to locate the garden. Where does your yard get the most hours of sunshine? That is the best location for your garden. Does this Spark an idea?

    Instructions

      1

Choose vegetables that you know your family loves to eat. Then choose one vegetable you've never tried before. Figure out how much of each vegetable you want to grow. The back of your seed packet will tell you how many vegetables per plant you can expect. Fresh vegetables are great at harvest time, but you may want to freeze some for the winter. Make sure that the seeds you choose will grow well in your planting zone (see Resources).

      2

Map out your vegetable garden design on a piece of graph paper. Locate the north end of your garden. This is the best location for plants that will grow taller. Grown in the north area, your tall plants will not shade the other, shorter vegetable plants in your garden. Plant pole beans, corn and peas here. For the best sun exposure, form your rows to go from north to south, with taller plants at the north end of each row.

      3

Place the lowest growing vegetables at the south end of your garden, where they will get the best sun exposure. Vegetables that are appropriate for the south end of your garden include carrots, radishes, onions, lettuce and beets.

      4

Locate medium-growth vegetables in the center of your rows, including plants such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes and squash.

      5

Protect your vegetable garden area. If you have household pets or small children, make sure to plan for adequate fencing to keep them out of the area.

More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

Nothing kills a campsite buzz like a tent with too many poles and too little instruction. Enter the Coleman Instant Tent 4, a four-person tent that sets up in less than a minute. The tent is made using an innovative one-piece design, with poles that come pre-attached to the tent. That means there's no frustrating assembly and no parts to lose. Simply unfold the tent, spread out the fabric, extend the poles, and click and lock. The only thing easier is rolling out your bag and sleeping in the open.

Made of heavy-duty 150D polyester taffeta, the Instant Tent 4 is every bit as sturdy as its traditional counterparts. The tent is outfitted with Coleman's exclusive WeatherTec system, a series of technical features intended to protect you from inclement weather and nasty storms. WeatherTec tents are built with a coated polyester fabric combined with anti-wicking thread, webbing, and zippers, all designed to keep you dry when the rain comes down. The tent's welded waterproof floor and inverted floor seams, meanwhile, dramatically increase the water resistance by hiding the needle holes inside the tent and away from the elements.

The tent is also fully taped, eliminating the need for a separate rainfly. Add in a strong, wind-responsive frame and you have a shelter that performs like a brick house during a storm. In fact, Coleman is so confident in its WeatherTec system that it exposes its WeatherTec tents to a rain room that simulates nasty downpours, and to a wind machine capable of blowing hurricane force gusts. The results? Even after the tests, Coleman guarantees its WeatherTec tents will keep you dry. The 4-Person Instant Tent, which sleeps up to four people in its 8-by-7-foot footprint, stands 59 inches tall in the center and includes room for one queen airbed. The tent weighs 35.55 pounds and carries a limited one-year manufacturer's warranty.

How to Lower Blood Pressure Quickly and Effectively

How to Lower Blood Pressure Quickly and Effectively

There are ways to lower blood pressure quickly and effectively. High blood pressure, also known as hypotension can be extremely dangerous to ones health, and it's important to find natural ways to lower blood pressure. Poor health in the cardiovascular system can tend to lead an increase in blood pressure. The heart is what pumps blood, so supporting a healthy heart functioning is a start.

          Instructions

            1

Get daily exercise. Being overweight can lead to an increase in blood pressure. Especially when you are eating foods that aren't particularly healthy at times. It's important to get daily exercise, and that should include running, jogging, treadmills, or swimming. Go to a local gym, and get motivated to lose some weight and get in better shape. Activity helps when lowering blood pressure.

            2

Eat foods that lower blood pressure and change your diet. Avoid that amount of salt in your diet. If you use salt, or need to, then use sea salt instead. Still limit your usage. Avoiding eating a lot of butter, saturated fats, lots of dairy products, and fast food. Avoid drinking alcohol, which increases blood pressure.

The foods that you need to eat more of are fish, whole grains, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fruits. You can meats, but start eating lean meats. Don't eat red meat. Skinless turkey, and chicken is good for you. You can make an herb sauce, to ad a bit more flavor. If you are cooking with oils, then use Olive oil. Olive oil will help lower blood pressure as well. Cook with garlic as well.

            3

Take the right supplements. Omega-3 fish oils is what you're looking for. This will lower your blood pressure, and is the proper oil to be taking. Doctors might even recommend that you take them. I wouldn't get medication, use fish oils, unless your doctor strongly advises differently. You can use garlic as well to lower blood pressure, it works great. Drink 8-10 cold glasses of water daily. Drink green tea, claimed to be the healthiest drink in the world. Get about five cups in you daily. Research has said that it lowers blood pressure 65% in middle aged people. You still need a proper diet to follow by, if you're going to lower blood pressure quickly and effectively. Medication won't do it alone, you have to put in the dedication to do it yourself.

          Indoor Games for Church Kids

          Indoor Games for Church Kids

Church games for children and adolescents provide great opportunities for adults to positively influence the lives of young people. Activities designed for church youth groups can build knowledge, foster a sense of community and teach lessons about teamwork and communication. Indoor games are ideal for medium-sized groups of youth ages seven to 18. These activities are low-maintenance and easy to clean up.

Games can make Bible study fun and interactive.

Give one Bible (or other religious text) to each youth. Seat the kids in chairs or pews. An adult leader calls out the name and number of a passage, psalm or scripture (for example, the leader would say, "John 3:14.") The kids find the passage in their text as quickly as possible. The first youth to stand up and begin reciting the correct passage wins one point. Play several rounds. The winner with the most points is awarded a prize (toy, game, treat, etc.).

          Trivia Toss

Combine knowledge games with athletic challenges to motivate children.

Create a list of 20 to 30 trivia questions and answers prior to playing; use a combination of religious and general knowledge questions. Divide the group into two teams. Set up a net or basket at one end of the room. Use tape to mark a line (the free throw line) 10 feet away from the basket. The leader reads a trivia question to the first team. The team provides an answer within 30 seconds. If they are correct, they receive one point and can send one team member to the free throw line. The team member has one chance to throw a ball into the basket for an extra point. If the team is incorrect, the other team has a chance to steal by answering correctly. The team with the most points after all questions have been read wins a prize.

Balloons can be used in a game to teach the value of teamwork and communication.
Balloons can be used in a game to teach the value of teamwork and communication.

Inflate 30 balloons. On each of the four walls, place a poster board; two should be marked Team 1 and two should be marked Team 2 . Divide the group into two teams; decide who is Team 1 and who is Team 2 . Each team member is given a chair; team members place their chairs anywhere in the room. When the game begins, every youth stands on his or her chair. The kids cannot leave their chairs until the end of the game. The team leader begins the game by releasing all of the balloons into the playing area. Each team must try to get as many balloons as possible to hit either of their poster board goals without ever leaving their chairs. At the end of three minutes, count up the score and let the teams move their chairs. Begin another round once everyone has decided. At the end of the game, lead a discussion about teamwork and strategy.

          This Is Your Church

Ask adult church members to submit sheets with little-known facts about their lives on them. Collect the sheets prior to the game. Divide the youth group into teams of four. Read the first team one of the facts. The team has 30 seconds to name the church member described in the fact. If they are correct, they receive one point. If they are incorrect, another team can try to steal their point. Continue until the facts have all been read. The winning team receives a prize. This is a great game to get kids to think about the people they see every week.

How to Make a Family Tree on Paper

How to Make a Family Tree on Paper

Family trees created on paper are a personal piece of history. A framed family tree makes an interesting keepsake that can be added to as the years go by or passed down from generation to generation.

          Instructions

            1

Gather all the information for your family tree. Write down everyone's full name, birthdays and relationship to one another. Consult family members and any records that they may have to double check the information.

            2

Sketch out the outline of your family tree using the information that you have gathered. This is just a rough draft to see how the tree is shaping up. Beginning in the center of your paper, write your name. Write the names of your parents above your name and their parents above both of them. Add siblings parallel to each other, attached to the proper parents.

            3

Consider adding birth and death dates whereever you can for each name on your tree. Anniversaries are also a nice touch that adds historical significance to your family tree. When writing down the parents and grandparents, be sure to add maiden names. This is extremely helpful if you plan on conducting more research into your genealogy.

            4

Create your family tree on a good sheet of paper. Choose a size that corresponds to how much information you have gathered. Having the sketch as complete as possible allows you to clearly see what you need.

            5

Write each name and all the dates lightly in pencil. Build the tree from the center up. Once all the names are filled in, draw decorative details. Sketch out a tree shape. The center name will be the trunk and then all the branches can be formed around the rest of the family.

            6

Draw over the penciled in words with an acid free pen. Let the pen marks dry completely and then lightly erase the pencil marks. Use colored pencils or other art supplies to complete the decorative aspects of your family tree.

                Fun Volleyball Games for Kids

Kids need to keep active to be healthy, and one of the best ways to do that is to play team games. Volleyball is a popular game for children to play, as it can be played indoors, outdoors or even at the beach. There are many types of fun volleyball games that can be tailored to fit the ages and number of kids who are playing.

                Blanket Volleyball

In this volleyball game, each group of four kids holds the corner of a blanket. Instead of hitting the ball over the net with the hands, the team must catch the ball with the blanket, then flip the blanket up into the air, launching the ball back over the net. Teams can be composed of four kids on each side with one blanket, or eight kids on each side in two groups, each with a blanket.

                Balloon or Beach Ball Volleyball

This game is played with the same rules as traditional volleyball. The only difference is that a balloon or blown-up beach ball is used instead of a hard volleyball. The lighter ball will have a much greater hang time, making it easier for younger children to set up to hit the ball.

                Under the Net

All the kids stand on one side of the net and are given a number. If there are eight kids, for example, then each child has a number between one and eight. An adult stands on the other side of the net and starts off by hitting the ball to the group of children. The first child (kid 1) must hit the ball back over the net. If he does so successfully, he runs under the net to the other side. Then, he serves the ball to kid 2. If he does not hit the ball over the net, he is out. As each child hits the ball, he must call out his number so that the next kid numerically in line will know it's his turn to hit the ball.

                Keep Away

This is a good game for practicing setting. Form a circle with the kids, and let one kid be in the middle. Then, send the ball over the kid in the middle to another child on the other side of the circle by setting it. The goal is to keep the ball away from the kid in the middle of the circle. If she catches it, she gets to join the circle and the person who set the ball has to be in the middle.

                    Family Activities in the 1960s

                    Family Activities in the 1960s

The 1960s were a decade of change and the American family was trying to keep up. Home floor plans were getting larger and eating around the table in a formal dining room followed by time in front of the TV in the family room was popular. Families gathered together for games and drives, too, and made sporting event -- whether watching or participating -- a part of their lives.

                    Board Games

Creativity flourished in the 1960s with board games; electrical advances meant new games could utilize electrical wiring for game effects. One popular family game in the 60s was Operation, where players have to remove plastic bones from a game board "patient" without hitting the side of the hole the bone sat in. Twister, the classic game where you match your hand or foot to a color dot, became a popular family and party game after its introduction in 1966.

                    Family Drives

Gas was affordable and more families than ever could afford assembly line-produced cars in the 60s. The United States was building miles of roads and family road trips became more popular than ever. "Sunday drive," where a family would take a leisurely drive through the countryside or other scenic location, was a common phrase in many Americans' vocabulary. Longer trips driving to state parks or the shore were also popular choices for vacationing families in the 60s. Another popular place to take the family car was the drive-in theater, where families could spend an inexpensive evening watching movies from inside their vehicles.

                    Television

Like with cars, TVs were becoming more common in American households in the 1960s. Even though the first color TVs were introduced in the 1950s, most families still gathered around a black and white set in the 60s to watch news reports, presidential debates, progress on the civil rights movement and original dramas and comedies. Popular shows included The Flinstones, The Andy Griffith Show, Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres.

                    Sports

Some baseball historians today call the 1960s baseball's "golden age," and many families either attended major or minor league games or played baseball in neighborhoods and leagues. Baseball continued to be the American pastime due to the league expansions that added more teams and allowed more families to go to games, the greats that became household names -- like Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Hank Aaron -- and the first televised baseball games in 1966. During the late 60s, football began to compete for Americans' attention span with the introduction of the Super Bowl and televised games the family could watch together in the evenings and weekends.

                    Fun Inside Games for Kids

As a parent or caretaker, you know that when it's rainy or cold outside, kids get cooped up inside. Unfortunately, that leaves them with loads of pent-up energy they never seem to exhaust. Having a few game ideas on hand will help them use that energy in a controlled manner. They don't need to take a lot of materials or even much thought. You just need some excited kids to get the games rolling.

                    Classic Games

Games like Simon Says, Red Light Green Light and Musical Chairs will keep kids busy.

To play Simon Says, one kids stands in front of the others and plays the part of Simon. Simon gives simple commands to the other players that they have to follow if he uses the phrase "Simon says" to begin. For example: "Simon says stand on one foot," and the players must do so. However, every so often Simon should give a command without saying "Simon says." Players do not have to do the command; in fact, if they do, they are out of the game. The game goes on until only one kid is left--and he gets to be the new Simon.

To play Red Light Green Light, one kids stands with her back to the others. When she says "Green Light," players must walk toward her. After a second or two, she turns and says "Red Light." The players must stop immediately. If someone gets caught moving, he has to start over. The player who reaches the speaker first takes her place.

For Musical Chairs, place enough chairs in a circle for every player except one. Have players walk around the chairs while you play music. When you stop the music, everyone races for a chair. The player left standing is out. Take away another chair and play again. Keep doing this until only one player is left.

                    Races

Races such as Pass the Ball, Mummy Wrap and Dress-Up can be great indoors.

To play Pass the Ball, divide kids into two groups and line each group up in a straight line. Give a ball to the first player in each line and tell him to place it under his chin and pass it to the player behind him without using his hands. That player then passes it behind him, and so on. The first group to get a ball to the last player wins.

Mummy Wrap is also a team game in which teams race to wrap one player in toilet paper to create a "Mummy." Each team gets one roll of toliet paper and must cover the entire player. The first team to finish wins.

Dress-up requires teams to dress their players in adult clothing and accessories. One player is dressed completely, then undressed, and so on. The team that dresses all of its players first wins.

                    African American Family Reunion Activities

                    African American Family Reunion Activities

Family reunions are a time-honored tradition for many African American families. Family reunions bring multiple generations together and serve to reconnect long-lost relatives and introduce participants to extended family. Planning a reunion means incorporating activities that bring family members together in a way that is not only engaging and interactive, but also instills a sense of family pride and teaches family history.

                    Games

Games bring people together, especially at a family reunion. Card games like spades, bid whist and pitty pat are a hit with many African American families, as is dominoes. Hold a tournament and choose games that bring groups together, such as Taboo, Scrabble, Jenga, Monopoly, Checkers and Connect Four. Award prizes to the winners of each game.

                    Talent and Fashion Show

Get younger members of the family involved by allowing them to put on a talent show. Gather the family around to watch the young people sing, rap, dance, recite poetry or perform monologues. Host a multi-generational fashion show where family members model fashions from different historical time periods. This is a wonderful activity to bring members of the different generations together and close the generational gap.

                    Food Contests

Everyone looks forward to all of the home-cooked food at a family reunion. Make cooking and eating one of the highlights of the reunion by holding a contest to see who has the best interpretation of a favorite family recipe. Give out prizes for best barbecue ribs, potato salad, gumbo or collard greens. Get the whole family involved by using family members as the panel of judges. For even more excitement, set a timer and have contestants prepare dishes right on the spot to see who can cook the dish in the shortest amount of time. During dessert, host a pie-eating contest to see who can eat more of grandma's famous apple pie or grandpa's peach cobbler.

                    Share Family History

As much as a family reunion is about food, games and meeting new family members, it is also a time to share and learn family history. This is especially true for African American families, who were separated over time due to historical events such a slavery. The family reunion is the perfect time for the elders of the family to share stories with the younger generation about forgotten ancestors.

Family history can be shared in a variety of interactive ways. Conduct on-the-spot interviews with older family members. Create a giant family tree wall chart and allow reunion attendees to add to and correct the chart. Host a family scavenger hunt where family members must question each other to find the answers to pre-printed family questions. Organize a group tour of locations with historical significance, such as the family plot at a cemetery, the church where your grandparents were married, or the house your great-grandfather built. Ask family members to bring old family photographs to be scanned and copied onto a CD and distributed to family reunion attendants. Hold story time and give family members an opportunity to share stories about prominent family members. Take this activity a step further by performing a skit or reenacting significant events from the family's history.

                    Recognize Family Achievement

Host an awards ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of individual family members such as graduations, promotions and other significant accomplishments. Recognize family milestones as well, such as wedding anniversaries, engagements and births. You can even hold a candle lighting ceremony to honor deceased relatives.

                    Kindergarten Science Lessons on Magnets

                    Kindergarten Science Lessons on Magnets

When you teach science with hands-on lessons, kindergarten students can see, touch, hear and experience the wonders of science. Because magnets involve invisible forces pushing and pulling, you can demonstrate magnetic force in a variety of ways to teach science lessons. Present kindergarten science lessons on magnets for eager students to begin learning about magnetic power.

                    Introduce Magnets

Spend some time introducing magnets to students. Most kindergarten children will be familiar with magnets at least to some degree. Mention drawing pictures for Mom and Dad and sticking the pictures to the refrigerator with magnets. Ask students what makes the pictures stick to the refrigerator. When students answer "magnets," talk about how magnets attract steel and iron items. Tell students that a magnet has a north pole and south pole and that these poles are the points with the most magnetic power.

                    Pick-Up Activity

Make several stations around the room with an assortment of items placed on trays. Include both items that magnets will attract and items that magnets will not attract. Suggestions include paperclips, nails, washers, screws, buttons, rubber bands, pennies and marbles. Divide students into smaller groups and have the student groups stand around the stations. Lead a prediction activity in which students will predict whether the magnets will attract the items or not and list the items and the predictions on the chalkboard. Instruct students to take turns in their small groups trying to pick up each item with a magnet and to record the magnetic results beside the predictions on the chalkboard. Compare the predictions and the actual results together.

                    Magnet Treasure Hunt

Make a list of items on handouts using pictures of the items for pre-reading students. Include both items that magnets will attract and items that magnets will not attract. Pass out magnets to two-student teams and instruct the students to find the items on the handout around the classroom. As the students find each item, they should place check marks beside the items that magnets will attract.

                    Magnetic Strength

Set up stations around the room with an assortment of different magnets (bars, horseshoes and discs) and paper plates filled with paperclips. Instruct the children to experiment with the different magnets to see which magnet will pick up the longest paperclip chain. Record results and compare the results of each team to see which team achieved the longest paperclip chain with the different magnets.

How to Draw a Family Tree When There Is a Divorce

How to Draw a Family Tree When There Is a Divorce

Historically, family trees have been used more as tools to track lineage than to track relationships by marriage. Therefore, many family trees, particularly older ones, may not have any special indicators that two parents of a child were divorced or were even officially married in the first place. Newer family trees may have these indicators, though, and family-tree-making software titles often have built-in tools for indicating marriage and divorce details.

                        Instructions

                          1

Create symbols for the married couple. Women are traditionally represented with circles or ovals and men are traditionally represented with squares, rectangles or triangles. Draw these symbols next to each other and write the corresponding name, birth date and, if applicable, death date under each symbol.

                          2

Draw a horizontal line between the two symbols. This connecting line can mean that the two are married, but not necessarily; an identical line is also used when any two unmarried people have one or more children together. If a vertical line is extended downward from the middle of this connecting line, it indicates that these two people did have children together, but does not tell you if they were married or not. If a horizontal line connects two people and no vertical line extends downward from the middle of the line, it does mean that they were married.

                          3

Draw two slash marks on the horizontal line connecting the two members of the divorced couple. If there is a vertical line extending downward from this line, indicating shared children, one slash mark should appear on each side of the vertical line.

                          4

Indicate spouses from remarriage by extending another line horizontally from the remarried person and symbolize the new spouse with the appropriate shape and identifying information. For example, if Bob and Mary Smith were married and then divorced, they would be connected by a horizontal line with two slashes. If Mary then remarried John Jones, you would draw a horizontal line from the open side of Mary's symbol and connect it to John's symbol with a solid line.

The secret to the tent's seamless setup is the pole system that comes pre-attached to the tent. As a result, assembly couldn't be easier: just unfold the tent, spread it out, extend the poles, click them together, and lock them into place. Before you know it, you'll have a full two-room tent that stands 14 by 10 feet, with a center height of 6 feet 5 inches. Despite the tent's versatility, it's still as strong and weatherproof as ever, with Coleman's exclusive WeatherTec system helping protect you from inclement weather and nasty storms. And campers will love the strong, wind-responsive frame, which includes redesigned poles and guy-out triangles that anchor the tents and increase performance.

The tent's exterior is tough and long-lasting, with heavy-duty 150D construction that's twice as thick as Coleman's standard tent fabric. When combined with the fully taped rain fly seams, the tent can even keep you dry without requiring a separate rain fly. The tent also offers ample room for sleeping or hanging out. Campers have their choice of sleeping in one large room with enough space for eight people, or dropping down the divider and turning the tent into a two-room palace. And hot nights will seem far more refreshing thanks to the two doors and seven windows, which provide terrific ventilation and 360-degree views. Other features include vertical walls that make it easy to stand and move about the tent, an interior gear pocket, reverse angle windows, and easy-to-follow instructions sewn into the durable carrying bag. The tent carries a limited one-year warranty.

How to Create a Family Reunion Booklet

How to Create a Family Reunion Booklet

Create a booklet to commemorate your next family reunion. Print it out and give it to family members at the reunion. Or save the document file on a CD for family members to print themselves. This booklet has four parts: introduction, personal family information, address book, and a family tree. It can also include photographs.

                                Instructions

                                  1

Send a letter to the families attending the event. Request that each family write several paragraphs on their family, such as where they are living, what they are doing, and other notable information. Ideally, this communication will be sent and received via email. This will make it easier for you to copy and paste the information they return into the booklet.

                                  2

Remember to ask each family member to include his contact information, such as phone numbers, mailing address and email address.

                                  3

Remember to ask each family member to include her complete name and birth date.

                                  4

Remember to ask each family member to email you a digital image of his family to include in the booklet.

                                  5

Create a document in Microsoft Word. In the beginning of the document write a brief introduction on the family and the upcoming reunion. Include the date and address of the family reunion. If you have a digital photograph of the reunion site, include it. If the reunion site is a resort or national park, you may find a suitable image online of the location.

                                  6

Create a section in the document to paste each of the family stories you receive. If a family sends you a digital image of the family, include it with their story.

                                  7

Create a section in the document to paste the contact information of the family members. This will be an address book section of the book.

                                  8

Create a family tree section. If you have family tree software, create a family tree on the program by inserting the family member's names and birth dates. Link parents with children. After you have created the family tree, many programs will allow you to export the information into a document file, which you can paste into your document. Generate a descendant chart for the "head" of the family. For example, if the reunion is for the descendants of Great-great-grandfather Smith, generate a descendant chart for him.

                                  9

Format and proof your document. Add a table of contents and design a cover. Page one will be the cover.

                                  10

When you go to print the document, you will choose the option "book fold" on the print menu, and check the "manual duplex" box. This will create a 6 1/2- by 8 1/2-inch booklet that will print out on regular-sized paper. By choosing manual duplex, it will print out two pages on one side of the paper and will signal you to remove the page and reinsert them to print on the other side.

                                  11

Bind the booklets by folding and stapling down the middle of the book.

                                    Weber's Original Gas Grilling System

Notice how sturdy the shroud feels as it opens smoothly on its hinges? See how the burners roar to life on the very first try? Delighted by how simple it is to achieve a mouthwatering meal every time? It's no accident. Weber spends countless hours perfecting the grilling systems on its gas grills, assuring easy assembly, an evenly heated cooking surface, and precision controls so you can tone things down or up to the perfect heat level for direct or indirect cooking.

                                    Cookbox and Shroud

The cookbox houses the components of the cooking system: cooking grates, burner tubes, and the grease management system.

Made of cast aluminum, Weber's gas-grill cookboxes are durable, efficient, require minimal care and maintenance, and can withstand the heat needed to grill at any temperature. In addition, the shape of the cookbox, when combined with the shroud, allows for the proper circulation of heat around food for even cooking whether you're using direct or indirect heat.

                                    Cooking Grates

Weber gas-grill cooking grates come in three exceptional materials: porcelain-enameled steel, stainless steel, and porcelain-enameled cast iron. Each type retains heat evenly and sears food beautifully. Porcelain-enameled steel cooking grates are durable and easy to clean. Stainless steel rod cooking grates make lovely sear marks, hold heat very well, and clean up with ease. Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates combine the ease of porcelain-enameled with the superior heat retention of cast-iron.

                                    Burner Tubes

Weber's burners are made of high-grade stainless steel, which will stand up to the small amounts of water found in liquid propane and natural gas. The burner tubes are made of a singular piece of

                                    Kids Outdoor Scavenger Hunt Ideas

                                    Kids Outdoor Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Scavenger hunts get kids moving and engage their thought processes as they search. The basic idea behind a scavenger hunt is to give the kids a list of items to find. You can work together as one group or divide kids into smaller groups for a competition. Each group should have an adult supervisor if you plan to go out into the community. After a predetermined amount of time, the kids return to see how many items they found. There are many different outdoor scavenger hunt themes to try.

                                    Nature Scavenger Hunt

The outdoors lends itself well to a nature scavenger hunt. The specific items on the list will depend on your environment and the exact location of the scavenger hunt. The items found on a beach will vary greatly from the natural items in a forest. Once you decide on the specific location of the nature scavenger hunt, you can create a list of items. Most scavenger hunt lists include items that are easy to find and some that are more difficult. This provides a challenge, while ensuring that no child or group returns empty-handed.

                                    Photo Scavenger Hunt

Sending a digital camera with each group is an alternative to having them physically collect the items on the list. This is a good idea if you want them to find large items. It also avoids disrupting natural items that are better left undisturbed. Most photo scavenger hunts require that at least part of the group appears next to the object. If the kids' scavenger hunt will occur all over town, major landmarks are a good option to include on the list. If you are holding the scavenger hunt in a more natural area, include types of trees, plants or animals on the list.

                                    Outdoor ABCs

Kids are never too old to practice their ABCs. This scavenger hunt is simple to prepare since you won't have a specific list of items. The goal for the kids is to find objects that start with each letter of the alphabet. For example, they might choose a rock for the letter "R" or a leaf for the letter "L." This scavenger hunt theme works well with the photography idea since the kids are likely to find large items that fit certain letters.

                                    Acts of Kindness

Instead of asking the kids to gather items, this scavenger hunt encourages them to perform acts of kindness around the neighborhood. The list should include several community service or kind acts the kids can quickly perform. Examples include help someone carry groceries, clean off a sidewalk, pick up litter or sing a song to someone. The age of the kids will influence the type of activities they can complete. This scavenger hunt works best in a busy neighborhood with lots of people.

How to Search Family History for Free

How to Search Family History for Free

There are some incredible resources on the internet where you can search for information on your family's history. Genealogy is a fascinating area, with many more people than ever before putting together their family tree, and re-discovering their roots. Here are some great resources you can use for free.

                                    Instructions

                                      1

Ancestry.com is a subscription service, but it happens to be the best and deepest family history resource available. In the area of genealogical research, nothing else really comes close.

Use the link in Resources, below, to visit the ancestry.com site and sign up for their free trial. This will give you a two week period in which to explore this rich database at no cost. You can use it free-search format, or to begin constructing a family tree. If you decide not to subscribe, be sure to cancel your free membership before the two weeks are over.

                                      2

**Use FamilySearch.org as Your Next Resource**

This church-sponsored site is also a tremendous and deep resource for searching for family history. It is particularly strong for ancestors from England, Ireland and Scotland, but also has in-depth resources covering other areas of the world. It also provides an enormous number of pointers for sites or resources that can be used for more information.

                                      3

                                      **Check Immigration Records at StevenMorse.org**

Steven Morse, an inveterate family history researcher, has created an unbelievably valuable collection of genealogical resources at stevenmorse.org. What's more, he's custom designed search interfaces to allow easy and in-depth exploration of databases from Ellis Island, Castle Island, and other entry ports for the waves of immigrants that arrived in the US in the nineteenth century. There is also information here from Census records, Canadian archives, manifest from ships arriving in Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans, and elsewhere, and tons of other information. All in all, a great site.

                                          About Coleman

How to Lose Weight Without Diet Pills

How to Lose Weight Without Diet Pills

Being overweight increases your chances for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and many other illnesses. Losing weight can effectively reduce those chances; however, you should avoid the temptations of the vast array of diet pills available. Not only can diet pills add to your risk for heart disease and high blood pressure, they are expensive, cause dependency and can destroy your natural metabolic balance for good. Losing weight is not simple, but you can do it without pills.

                                            Instructions

                                              1

Decrease your daily caloric intake by 500 calories to lose between 1 and 2 lbs. each week. While counting calories may be slower than powerful diet pills, it is a safe, natural and sure way of shedding pounds. As a general rule, if you are inactive you should take in about 2,000 calories a day. If you are more active, you can eat up to 2,500 calories and still lose weight.

                                              2

Burn more calories than you eat by adding 30 minutes of brisk exercise to your daily routine. Your choice of exercise will depend on your body type, weight and personal preference. For people carrying 100 extra pounds or more, a simple stroll through the park or cleaning the house is probably enough to burn the extra calories. If you are only trying to lose that last five pounds, you may be better off with weight training, aerobics or jogging.

                                              3

Eat a wide variety of foods that include all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to maintain balance and metabolism. Fresh fruits and vegetables are your best source of calories, while trans fats, saturated fats as well as refined flours and sugars should be avoided.

                                              4

Expect slow results if you want permanent results. While some diet pills offer fast and dramatic weight loss, it is not healthy for your body to lose more than 10 pounds per month. The faster the weight comes off, the less likely you will be able to keep it off. Persistence, lifestyle change and a healthy diet are the best ways to lose weight naturally and safely without dangerous diet pills.
