        Family Naturist Activities

        Family Naturist Activities

Naturism, or nudism, is a lifestyle that rejects the societal expectation to be fully clothed for most of one's waking life. Naturists do not view nudity as having any inherent sexual association; instead, they view nudity as more comfortable, freer and valuing the beauty of the human body rather than attempting to hide it. Naturist parents who decide to raise their children in the same lifestyle may encounter obstacles along the way, but there are several fun and legal activities available to pursue.

        Sports

Many sports, such as tennis and football, require special clothes, shoes or padding for protection or game play, but there are dozens of sports that naturist families can enjoy free from fear of physical harm or exposure. Many sports are actually easier to play without the constraints and weight of shoes and clothing. Popular naturist sports include volleyball, petanque, table tennis and swimming.

        Hiking/Camping

Exploring the great outdoors by hiking and camping is a common pastime for naturist families. There are dozens of nude camping areas and resorts in the United States and even more in Europe and Asia. Of course, skin is more exposed to the elements during these acitivities, so it is important to apply sunscreen frequently and pick a shady camp area.

        Boating/Fishing

Taking the family on a boat trip in a private or nudist-friendly lake is a great idea for a peaceful day trip away from civilization. Many resorts are located adjacent to lakes with paddle boats and fishing.

        Beach Trip

Another popular naturist family day trip is a beach holiday. Officially recognized clothing-optional beaches provide a safe haven where children can mingle with other families without the risk of feeling different.

How to Relieve a Curved Toenail

How to Relieve a Curved Toenail

Curved toenails can be painful, and a foot issue that can lead to further problems such as ingrown toenails. Curved toenails can happen for a number of reasons, such as improper nail trimming, wearing an improper sized shoe, or excessive stress on the feet due to running, jogging, or walking. Fortunately, relieving curved toenails is a simple and easy process requiring only a few household items. Relieving a curved toenail can prevent further pain and minimize the chance of infection. Does this Spark an idea?

              Instructions

                1

Fill a bucket half way with clean, warm water. The temperature should be warm enough to comfortably place your foot in it.

                2

Place the foot with the curved toenail into the bucket with warm water. Let your foot soak in the warm water for 10 minutes.

                3

Remove your foot from the warm water and dry it off with a towel.

                4

Use your nail file and nail clippers to carefully re-shape your curved toenail to form a straight line across your toe. Make sure you do not cut or file your nail too short, but to leave a little white showing past your nail bed.

                5

Repeat steps 1 through 4 every week to prevent your nail from becoming curved again. Curved toenails tend to dig into the skin, causing ingrown toenails. Keeping their shape straight across the toe will prevent further issues.

Elementary School Activities for Family Reading Night

Elementary School Activities for Family Reading Night

Families that read together learn together. And what's more, an elementary school Family Reading Night can be great fun. Education World says "reading nights not only motivate children to read more at home, but they also can encourage parents to get more involved in their children's education." Space and time devoted to families reading together is important. The activities you provide at a reading night can help build a love of reading and promote parental involvement.

                  Themed Activities

Create a theme for your Family Reading Night. The theme provides a hook to draw families in and makes it easier to plan your activities around the theme. Theme your night around the time of year; a Halloween Reading Night can include scary stories or poems read by children or teachers with a dress-up element that makes reading aloud more fun. December is the time for Celebrations Reading Night with parents or teachers reading their favorite holiday stories among the festive decorations. Develop your theme through costume. Hold a Pyjama Party Reading Night, set up cushions and blankets and have children come along dressed in their pyjamas to listen to stories read by their parents or teachers. Kids can come dressed as their favorite characters and read a little from their favorite books. Try Hat Night for parents and children to come wearing fun hats and tell stories about hats. Create a "story-telling hat" that is passed around as a cue for parents to read out loud. Have parents brings a flashlight and blanket to sit on for Flashlight Reading Night, darken the gym, and let families sit reading a favorite book to each other in their own space. Set up the school into themed rooms that are decorated and filled with books related to that theme. Provide parents with a map and schedule times for a themed "read-aloud" in each room.

                  Guest Readers

Enliven your Family Reading Night with guest readers who come in with their favorite books and present them to parents, children and teachers. Match the type of books or readers to your theme. Invite local celebrities, sportsmen and women, community leaders, principals, church leaders and librarians. Ask uniformed members of the community such as police officers, firefighters or military personnel to be your guest readers and talk about their work. Invite local authors to come in and read from their books. Many Family Reading Nights arrange for professional storytellers to give dramatic readings. Others schedule a guest reader who has real expertise in a certain area relating to reading and writing, for instance folk tales, Native American literature, or even American Sign Language. Try a bilingual theme with readers presenting stories in Spanish.

                  Parent/Child Activities

Have a few fun activities related to reading for parents to participate in with their children. Try a book-themed Scavenger Hunt in the classrooms or outside if the season allows. Set up craft stations to do with literacy. For example, have a bookmark-making activity station or a make-a-book corner. Set up a room with the beginnings of fairy tales on big sheets of paper for parents and children to complete in their own words. Keep a guest register at the front entrance for all guests to sign in by writing their favorite books and then write all these favorites on a "graffiti wall" where children can add their ideas and pictures.

How to Catch a Gar Fish

A gar is a long and slender fish with a long bony mouth. Gar are considered by some to be a trash fish, meaning a less desirable catch, or a scavenger as they will eat just about anything either living or dead. Gar are found in many rivers and streams and are found living among bass, bream, perch, and many other species. Fishing for gar is not as difficult as many may think and gar are great fun to battle when hooked.

                        Instructions

                          1

Locate a creek, stream or river where there are gar. Talk with local fishermen to obtain information on where to find gar. The fish will often be visible swimming just under the surface of the water.

                          2

Rig the line by tying on a 1/0-2/0 size bait keeper hook using an clinch knot. To tie the knot, pass the line through the eye of the hook with 3 to 4 inches of line extending through to the other side. Wrap the short end of the line around the main line for 6 to 7 turns and feed the end of the line through the small loop formed above the eye of the hook. Moisten the knot and pull tight. It is not necessary to weight the line for fishing.

                          3

Place a minnow, small pan fish, or cut piece of fresh fish on the hook. Make sure the bait is securely attached to the hook.

                          4

Cast the bait to the gar. If the fish is motionless in the water, place the bait just slightly in front of the fish and allow the bait to slowly settle in the water. If the fish is swimming, throw the bait further in front of the fish.

                          5

Allow the gar to take the bait and wait a couple of minutes. Gar typically chew on the bait and then turn to swim and will chew some more. It is important that the gar swallow the bait before you set the hook. Once the hook is set, reel in the slack and play the fish to the bank or boat where it should be netted.

How to Grow a Small Vegetable Garden

Many homeowners dream of planting a vegetable garden, yet yard space or community rules could limit the size of the garden. Vegetable gardens grow in the smallest of areas by using one of these three methods for successful small garden growing. Does this Spark an idea?

                        Instructions

                          1

Use the century old method of French intensive gardening that combines special soil preparation with heavy organic fertilizing and dense plantings of vegetables.

                          2

Prepare the garden bed by rototilling or double digging with a spade. Work in compost and manure until 1/3 of the top 12 inches of soil is organic matter.

                          3

Form a low mound with the soil and rake smooth. Add manure and bone meal to the top 2 inches of the mound and work it in before raking smooth again.

                          4

Water the mound for 2 days before planting with seed or starter plants. Thin the seedlings in a French intensive garden to half of the required spacing recommended on the packet.

                        Use Raised Beds or Planters

                          5

Choose to plant a small garden using raised beds or planters if the soil is not fertile or has poor drainage. Using raised beds also minimizes the stooping required for weeding and planting. In addition, raised bed soil warms earlier than the surrounding ground.

                          6

Make a raised bed by stacking 2-inch thick treated boards into a 4x4 foot square until 12 inches high. Support the boards with stakes on the outside.

                          7

Fill the planter with enriched soil until about 3 inches below the top edge of the planter box.

                          8

Construct raised beds in traditional squares or rectangles, as stepped boxes for more plantings or as a planter with a trellis for pole beans.

                        Grow Vegetables in Containers

                          9

Grow vegetables in containers all year round since they can move from indoors to the patio or deck and the backyard.

                          10

Plant vegetables like lettuce, carrots and radishes that take up little garden space in a container garden. Rhubarb or squash quickly outgrow a container garden.

                          11

Use a galvanized or plastic pail to grow vegetables in, as long as it is sturdy. If there are no drain holes, drill some around the base about an inch from the ground on the sides.

                          12

Fill the container with a garden mix of vermiculite, peat moss and fertilizer before planting.

                          13

Buy miniature varieties of garden vegetables that use less space to grow in container gardens.

How to Fundraise & Recruit Sponsors for Youth Sports

How to Fundraise & Recruit Sponsors for Youth Sports

Obtaining sponsorships and funding for a youth sports program can be challenging and time consuming. But with a team effort, planning and strategy, you can raise money for your athletic program. When you're putting together your plan, remember that it's very much like job-hunting. For best results, don't count on letters to do the job. Networking works best.

                        Instructions

                          1

Schedule a meeting with the parents of team members to explain the financial needs of the team or program. Some parents may be business owners who are more than willing to sponsor the team or provide other financial assistance. Also, recruit the help of parents who may have friends or family members with businesses that could lend their support. Ask those parents to talk with their friends or family members.

                          2

Seek out established enterprises in the community that do business with the families of youth program participants, such as popular pizza shops or sporting goods or convenience stores. One of them might be willing to make a major donation in exchange for having its name on team uniforms. Ask those that aren't able to make a major financial commitment for a smaller donation. Approach these businesses directly. If you live in a smaller community, you might already know the owners of the businesses. Impress on those with whom you speak that their donations will likely pay off in the form of goodwill and increased business.

                          3

Ask companies to sponsor a banner. For example, a business that donates $200 could get a banner in the sports facility where the team plays. A banner is good advertising for the company and demonstrates its support of the team.

                          4

Call local businesses and seek permission to use their property for a fundraising event. Ask a supermarket for permission to have a bake sale outside the entrance, or ask a drugstore for permission to have a car wash at the rear of the store. Schedule your event on a Saturday morning to take advantage of heavy shopping.

                          5

Seek the advice of successful youth teams and organizations in the community. For example, if you see that the high-school band has ample funding, ask the band director how she raises money. You could also ask the girls' softball coach how he sets up fundraisers or a sponsorship campaign.

How to Live Off 1 Acre of Land

How to Live Off 1 Acre of Land

One acre of land can produce an annual yield of thousands of pounds of vegetables, fruit, honey, meat, eggs, milk and other foods. Even just a quarter-acre of land will produce more than enough food to feed the average family of four, leaving much of the food to be sold for profit to help provide for other basic needs. It is quite possible for a family to live simply off one acre, although it does require some business planning to determine how to market and sell crops for additional income. Does this Spark an idea?

                        Instructions

                          1

Cultivate a large vegetable garden as the first part of living off one acre of land. Just 12 garden beds measuring four feet by eight feet each can produce a total of more than 2,000 pounds of vegetables per year when planned carefully. The key to harvesting an abundance of vegetables is to grow multiple crops in the same area at different times. For example, crops such as spinach, peas, broccoli and beets can be planted and harvested in the spring, leaving the garden beds ready for planting of summer crops such as tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and corn. Once those are harvested, the cool-season crops can be planted again and grow into the fall. Excess vegetables can be canned, stored in a root cellar to be eaten in the winter or sold at a local farmers market for profit.

                          2

Grow fruit trees to add to the harvest of fresh produce. When planting fruit trees, it is important to learn what trees grow best in the area before attempting to grow them. Canning excess fruit is a necessity to preserve it for eating during the rest of the year, and both fresh and canned fruit can be sold for additional income.

                          3

Plant small patches of grains such as oats, rye and wheat to help to supplement the family's diet. For example, a 25-by-50-foot patch of wheat will yield about 50 pounds. Grains do not make a very large profit when farmed in small quantities, so it is best to avoid trying to sell them.

                          4

Keep bees unless there is a bee allergy in the family. One hive will produce about 100 pounds of honey per year, which is more than enough for the family to use as sweetener. Additional honey can be bottled and sold at farmers markets and at local specialty stores.

                          5

Keep a dozen hens, which will produce about 120 dozen eggs over the course of a year. This is enough for each person in a family of four to eat an egg every day, and with more chickens, additional eggs could be sold for profit.

                          6

Raise a few pigs to supplement the family's diet with some meat. Pigs require only 150 square feet per animal, making them ideal for a one-acre family farm. Young feeder pigs weighing 40 pounds will get to a harvest weight of 240 pounds within just 120 days, although they will eat 10 to 12 bushels of corn and 125 to 150 pounds of protein supplement during that time.

                          7

Keep goats, sheep and cows for milk or for slaughter. Generally a cow will require about a half-acre of pasture, but goats and sheep can be kept in a smaller pasture of a quarter acre or less. A single dairy cow will produce about six gallons of milk per day, leaving plenty for making cheese, butter and selling locally. Sheep and goats also produce milk, although the taste will be different from the traditional cow's milk.

                          School Sports Day Activities

A school sports day, also known as a field day, provides an entertaining event that allows students to participate and enjoy success. An encouraging atmosphere at the school sports day ensures that all kids feel comfortable participating in the activities. Adapting these ideas allows them to be used for a variety of children. Vary the skill level for each activity to meet the age and abilities of the participants.

                          Relays

Relays offer a versatile sports event for the school sports day. There are many variations the basic relay race idea. Dress-up relays require a person from each team to put on a costume, run around a cone and return to the starting point. She removes the costume and passes it on to the next team member, who repeats the process. A balloon relay requires each player to run to the end of the playing field, grab a balloon and pop it. He returns to the starting line to tag the next team member, who takes a turn at popping a balloon. To challenge the balance of the students, have each of them place a plastic egg on a spoon, and walk the length of the field, around a cone and back to the start.

For an outdoor relay, fill a bucket with water and place it at the far end of the field. Place an empty bucket at the starting line. Provide a small cup for each team. One at a time, have the students race to the full bucket, grab a scoop of water and dump it into the empty bucket at the starting line. The first team to fill the bucket wins.

                          Bowling

Use a real bowling set or make your own for a competition to see who can knock down the most pins with one roll. Two-liter bottles work well as homemade bowling pins. Place about an inch of water or sand in each bottle as a weight. Arrange the pins in the usual bowling formation. Provide each child with a ball, allowing one turn to try to knock down as many pins as possible.

                          Fishing

Fill a kiddie pool with water. Add 50 to 100 pingpong balls, depending on the number of kids participating in each round. Provide each player with a small fishnet that is used for aquariums. Set a timer for one minute. As the time begins, the students catch the pingpong balls with the fishing net without using hands to help. Provide a bucket for each child to hold her pingpong balls as she catches them. Award a prize to the student who catches the most pingpong-ball fish in the time limit. Other options in place of the balls include plastic fish, ice cubes or small toys.

Cute Ideas for a Family Portraits

Family portraits are a traditional way to document the life of your family. However, as the family and tastes have changed, the usual sit-down portrait is being replaced with more whimsical, relaxed or cute poses and themes. Whether the portrait is of you and your dog, you and your partner and children, or you and your siblings, there are ways to break away from the ordinary and create memorable art that captures who you really are.

                          Candid Portraits

Your family portrait doesn't have to be shot in a studio. Hire a photographer to spend a day with your family as you go through your normal routine or on a day trip together. Let the photographer take candid, spontaneous shots of you as well as pose you during the day. Be yourself--dress as you like, go someplace your whole family enjoys, have fun with one another. The photographer will be able to photograph your family in a unique and fun way that really captures your personalities.

                          Play up Your Interests

Is your family into fishing? Scrabble? Biking together? Ask your photographer to take pictures of you engaged in or referring to these family activities. You could all be posed on your bikes, or holding up your Scrabble tile racks with your names or the date spelled out. Are you fans of a sports team? Have your photo taken with everyone wearing their team gear--including face paint or funny hats. Is everyone a runner? Have your family portrait taken of just your feet--in your running shoes.

                          Multiple Pictures

Have a lot of photos taken with your family in different poses, and of each individual--and pet--in the family in front of bright colors, or wearing bright colors. Combine these in an Andy Warhol-style photo montage. Or take multiple photos in color and black-and-white and cut them out or use a photo imaging program to create a collage of images.

                          Famous Poses

Borrow from famous paintings or pictures you like and create fun and cute family portraits mimicking those paintings. Like the farm couple from Grant Wood's American Gothic? Pose with a pitchfork and a deadpan expression. Love Berthe Morisot's paintings of mothers and children? Pose in the same manner. Are you a huge fan of the Addams Family? Dress everyone in black and pose a la Morticia and Gomez. Love the Beatles? Pose as the Fab Four crossing Abbey Road or on Ed Sullivan.

How to Prepare a Family Budget Excel Spreadsheet

How to Prepare a Family Budget Excel Spreadsheet

Raising a family is expensive and requires financial planning. Figuring out where all your money goes throughout the month and making plans for next months budget is crucial, but many people dont know how. Creating a family budget is easy when you use an electronic spreadsheet application -- such as Microsoft Excel -- that tracks your familys finances in one place. These budget spreadsheets feature built-in formulas that do all the math required, so anyone can prepare a family budget fairly quickly.

                            Instructions

                              1

Gather financial records for your entire family. Separate income and expense records into two piles.

                              2

Open Microsoft Excel. Click on the Office Button or File on older versions. Select New. Scroll down the template list and click on Budgets. Select Home Budgets.

                              3

Narrow your search by disregarding templates not created specifically for families or households, such as templates titled Personal, Wedding and College. Find a budget template that best fits your familys needs. Click Download or Open.

                              4

Check the spreadsheet layout to ensure there are categories that cover your familys incomes and expenses.

                              5

Highlight the category name and type in your new name to rename it. Right-click on a rows number and select Insert to add new categories or select Delete to remove categories as needed. Keep all new categories added above the total section. This ensures the new category is included in the total formula.

                              6

Use your familys financial records to fill in the budget spreadsheets cells for both income and expenses. Use your mouse or the Tab key to move from cell to cell and the Undo arrow to make corrections. Replace any figures previously on the templates with your figures and leave any unused categories blank.

                              7

Notice the total amounts throughout the spreadsheet changing as you type in your familys income and expenses. Determine what modifications, if any, are needed for your familys budget for the next month. Plan what to do with excessive income, such as setting up a savings account. Decide what expenses your family can do without if your monthly total is negative.

                              8

Click the Office Button or File on older versions. Select Save, name the file and click Save again.

Set up a sports day-themed event for your preschool. Choose events that all of the children can participate in and that emphasize team spirit over competition. Also look for sports activities that are safe and age-appropriate when you are choosing the materials for the games. At the end of the day, hand out small paper medals or ribbons to each student as recognition for their hard work.

Inspire team spirit and country pride with an Olympic theme. Use the day to highlight a variety of sports, the difference in medal colors or the carrying of the torch. Group the children into small groups representing different "countries" and have them march in time to the music as they enter the classroom arena or set up a short relay race where the children run several yards and then hand off a balloon to another child to complete the course. End the day with a closing ceremony.

                            Basketball Theme

Bring the NBA playoffs into the classroom with a basketball-themed lesson plan. Allow the students to wear T-shirts in the colors of their favorite sports teams as they practice basketball drills. Teach teamwork by having the children pass the ball back and forth before shooting it. Reinforce hand-eye coordination by directing each child to dribble the ball to the basket and shoot or have the children take turns shooting free throws. Host a small ceremony at the end of the day and present basketball ribbons to all of the students.

                            Boot Camp

Highlight patriotism and the troops overseas as you set up a boot camp military. Showcase the activities learned in boot camp, such as synchronized movement, dexterity of motion and individual physical conditioning. Bring the children through their own mini-boot camp by setting up an obstacle course on the playground. Include activities such as calisthenics where they bend down and touch their toes, twist their bodies from side to side or stretch tall and reach for the sky. Finish the day by having the children each draw a picture to send to an overseas soldier.

                            Dance Theme

Celebrate National Dance Day with a dance theme. Discuss dance as a universal means of creative expression as you show your students different cultural dances. Teach them to interact socially and follow directions as they learn to square dance or highlight the illustrative portion of dance by showing them the hula and the interpretive motions of the hands. Have the children place their hands on their hips and kick their legs out in a lively Irish step dance. Complete the lesson plan by having each child describe their favorite dance.

The water BOB is a water containment system that holds up to 100 gallons of fresh drinking water in virtually any bathtub in the event of an emergency. The water BOB keeps water fresh and clean for drinking, cooking, washing and flushing. Water stored in an open bathtub, with dirt, soap film and exposure to debris will spoil and become useless. A hurricane, tropical storm, flood or storm surge can interrupt or even contaminate your water supply. It is during these conditions the water BOB may be used for temporary water storage. Constructed of heavy duty plastic that is FDA compliant for food storage, the water BOB keeps water fresh and clean for up to 12 weeks. The water BOB is very easy to use. Simply lay the liner in any bathtub, attach the fill sock to the faucet and fill the bladder to capacity, which takes approximately 20-40 minutes. A siphon pump is included to easily dispense the water into jugs or pitchers. Never wait in line again to buy expensive bottled water. Always be prepared with the water BOB.

More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

                                    How to Grow Watermelon

                                    How to Grow Watermelon

Mark Twain ranked watermelon as "chief of this world's luxuries." You can grow this yummy, heat-loving annual fruit in USDA zone 4 and warmer, but in cooler areas choose short-season varieties and do whatever it takes to protect your crop from chilly temperatures. Does this Spark an idea?

                                    Instructions

                                      1

Choose a site that gets full sun, is protected from chilly winds - especially in spring and fall - and gets good air circulation. A gentle, south-facing slope is ideal.

                                      2

Dig plenty of organic matter into the soil to provide the conditions watermelons need: a light, sandy, fertile loam that is well-drained yet retains moisture. A near-neutral pH is best, but watermelons will tolerate soil as acid as 5.5.

                                      3

Buy watermelon plants at a nursery; plan to plant them after both air and soil temperatures have reached 65 degrees F (usually two to three weeks after the last frost). Otherwise, sow seeds directly into the garden. Direct sowing is best if your growing season is long enough for the plants to mature (check your seed packet). Watermelons don't like to be transplanted.

                                      4

Prepare the soil well at planting time, even if you've added plenty of organic matter earlier. For each plant, dig a hole two feet in diameter and a foot deep, and add at least a shovelful of compost or well-cured manure and a trowel or two of bone meal.

                                      5

Set hardened-off transplants into the ground at the depth they were growing in their pots. Sow seeds an inch deep in hills. (See "How to Harden off Transplants" and "How to Start Vegetable Seeds Outdoors.") Water thoroughly with compost tea.

                                      6

Allow plenty of space between plants. Depending on the variety, they should be anywhere from 3 feet (for small bush types) to 12 feet apart (for giant ramblers).

                                      7

Apply a thick organic mulch to hold in moisture, deter weeds and keep the melons clean as they grow. Or, if you don't care how your patch looks, use a black plastic mulch, with slits cut for the plants. It will hold in heat better than any other soil covering.

                                      8

Cover the plants with floating row covers to keep the air warm, and give young plants an inch of water a week.

                                      9

Remove all covers as soon as flowers appear so that bees and other insects can pollinate the plants, and begin fertilizing with compost tea every three weeks.

                                      10

Note when the plants are in full bloom: watermelons should be ready to pick about 35 days later.

How to Plant a Vegetable Garden

Planting a vegetable garden outside your back door is a rewarding experience. By cultivating and planting your own garden, you can plant the vegetables you like and nurture them without pesticides or other harmful agents. If you have kids, you can teach them how to plant a vegetable garden and how to care for plants. At dinner time, your family will be rewarded with the freshest vegetables possible. Does this Spark an idea?

                                    Instructions

                                      1

Make a list of vegetables that you want to grow. Be sure that your list includes vegetables with various harvest seasons so that you have a constant supply of fresh veggies.

                                      2

Map out your garden on paper. On your map, indicate where each vegetable will be planted in your garden. Place vegetables needing full sunlight in sunny areas. Vegetables needing less light should have some shade.

                                      3

Prepare your soil by checking to be sure that the soil is loose and free of rocks. You can enhance your soil by adding organic matter, lime and some commercial fertilizer.

                                      4

Dig your trenches for each row, but be sure to leave enough room so that you can walk between the rows without stepping on your plants.

                                      5

Plant your seeds according to the instructions on the seed packet label. You may need to use a ruler to be sure that you are placing the seeds in the ground at the appropriate depth.

                                      6

Cover the seeds with dirt carefully and then pat down the dirt to hold in the moisture.

                                      7

Mark your seeds with a marker so you know where things are planted in the garden.

                                      8

Monitor your garden and water according to the requirements for each individual plant.

                                    How Do Sports Help Kids?

                                    How Do Sports Help Kids?

For children, sports don't just have to be child's play. By participating in sports, kids can become healthier, happier and more well rounded adults. Sports help kids in a variety of ways from building stronger bones to building a foundation for school and life success.

                                    Healthy Weight

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 19 percent of children in the United States are overweight. Playing in sports helps overweight children obtain a healthy weight and can also prevent future weight issues.

                                    Self-esteem

Participating in sports fosters healthy self-esteem in kids through the healthy exchange of encouragement.

                                    Good Sportsmanship

By teaching sportsmanship, sports help children evolve in the emotional areas of their lives. They learn about wins, losses, hard work and commitment.

                                    School Success

Kids perform better in school. In addition to earning good grades, active children are also more likely to complete high school and college.

                                    Better Bones

Active participation in sports strengthens bones. This lowers the risk of osteoporosis when kids become older.

                                      About Wenzel:
Wenzel has been bringing families together and creating lasting memories in the outdoors for the last 120 years. When the sun rose on the first family campers in America, Wenzel was there. Wenzel has built a company around the basic human need to escape, recharge, and connect with the outdoors. Wenzel creates the modern tools that families require to experience the outdoors in comfort. To do this, they run each product through a very specialized filter--their own families. New features for family camping are easy to talk about in boardrooms with power point presentations, but are a whole different story in the middle of the woods. Wenzel knows what family camping is like, which is why they make the tents easy to set up, take down and pack away for next time.

Enrichment Activities for Gifted & Talented Students

Enrichment Activities for Gifted & Talented Students

Gifted and talented students have a higher capacity for learning than their peers. Because of this enhanced academic ability, these students commonly are not challenged by the academic activities presented to the general class. To ensure these students receive the enrichment necessary to thrive, teachers can provide them with higher-level activities that challenge and intrigue these highly skilled students.

                                      Self-Directed Portfolio

Allow gifted and talented students to play a role in their own education by engaging them in the creation of a self-directed portfolio. Instruct the student to select a topic to study. This topic can be scientific, historical or even social in nature. The only rule is that it should be something in which the student has a keen interest. Help the student gather books and other media and learn about the topic. Then, allow the student to create a representation of his understanding by writing a story, composing an essay, creating a work of art or producing any other product of his choice. Place this work in his portfolio.

Continue to allow the student to select and study his own topics, making his education unique to him and allowing him the opportunity to be guided by his interest, in any direction he selects.

                                      School Improvement Plan

Invite the gifted student to consider a way in which the school community could be beautified by developing a school improvement plan. Allow the student to select something about the school that he would like to change. This could be anything from the standard school lunch menu to the sports facilities. Ask the student to research the area that he selected and create a plan for improvement. Assist the student in creating a draft of his improvement plan and even planning out a budget that outlines how much the improvement would cost. To conclude the project, allow the student the opportunity to present his plan to the school principal or other school officials.

                                      Video Tutorial

Transform the student into the teacher by engaging her in the creation of a video tutorial. Allow the student to write a lesson in which she explains a concept that she understands clearly to her peers. Create a digital recording of the student giving this lesson, and transfer the recording onto the computer. Allow the student to use iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to edit the recording and turn it into a polished video product. Invite other teachers to use the lesson in their teaching, or share it with students who are struggling with the topic.

                                      Sports Awards Banquet Ideas

                                      Sports Awards Banquet Ideas

Sports banquets are a great time to reflect on the end of a great season and commemorate the teams best athletes. Many seniors will likely not continue the sport in college: the banquet will be one of the last times to reflect on their beloved activity. To make the event extra special requires the contribution of friends, coaches, teammates, parents and cheerleaders.

                                      Family and Friends Interviews

Make a one-hour video by assembling interviews of the players friends and family. Privately, send letters to the parents asking them to make a video about their athlete. They can mention humorous childhood memories or moments that made them the most proud of their child. Compile the interviews into one video, and play it on a projector during the banquet. Include music clips for an added effect.

                                      Autograph Signing

Toward the end of the ceremony, have each graduating senior line up and sign a ball or a related piece of sports equipment. If the object is large enough, like a paddle, have them write a short note. House the item in a trophy case and make a tradition of having each senior class sign one: you never know how much that piece of equipment will be worth!

                                      A Final Game

For the conclusion of the banquet, hold one last game for the team. Have the audience come and cheer on the players for the last time in the season. The game can be senior versus the rest of the team, or varsity versus JV. Consider using the event as a fundraiser for next years team and charge a small amount for the tickets. Get the cheerleaders involved and ask them to divide in similar teams to cheer for each side.

                                      Song and Dance

Though athletes might be tough on the field, few see their potential talent as singers and dancers. For the introduction of the banquet, encourage members of the team to choreograph a song and dance routine. The coaches can do a dance, too. The players can make an earnest effort to learn a serious song and routine, or they can make it completely comical.

The routine could also be a tribute to the cheerleaders for their support and encouragement during the season. Have the athletes dress up as cheerleaders and perform a cheer skit in their honor.

                                      Game Centerpieces

Make each table theme in celebration of one of the winning games. Make paper cutouts of both of the school mascots and label it as the Dobson vs. Mountainview table. Decorate the table in the colors of both teams. On each table setting, include a picture from that game.

                                      Speeches

Ralph and Michael Sabock, authors of the book Coaching, recommend hiring a college coach to speak at the sports banquet. They do, however, say this is a costly option. Ask the coaches of the team to prepare a speech highlighting the seasons best moments. Senior captains should also be invited to make a speech as well.

                                      Family Night Activities at Church

                                      Family Night Activities at Church

Family nights at church can be filled with fun and excitement, but organizers may find it difficult to organize specific activities. Church nights are common throughout the country and can be church related or designed to promote bonding and teamwork. These are all activities that the family can enjoy together.

                                      Movies

Watching movies with a Christian theme or a family-friendly theme is a good way to spend an evening at church. It's fun for the family and it can be a good conversation piece when the movie is over. Food and drink can be provided for before, during or after the movie. Movie watching is a good social event that promotes family time.

                                      Concerts

For the aspiring musicians in the congregation, a concert can be held as a fundraiser or just to showcase talent. Concerts are a good activity to bring families together as long as the music is family friendly. It's also a good way to support the musicians in the congregation.

                                      Fellowship Meals

Families can bring an item that they enjoy eating as a potluck dinner. Bringing people together through a meal is a way to promote fellowship and get to learn more about one another in the congregation.

                                      Game Night

This can be any family-friendly board game that's fun to play. The idea is to bring together families to play games into the night and bond with one another. It's also a low-key way for family members to challenge each other.

                                      Devotionals or Sermons

A good family night can include an evening of devotionals that can be topical or random. Outside of a normal worship service, devotions and Bible studies can be held so long as permission is granted.

Ideas for Landscaping a Garden With Bricks

Ideas for Landscaping a Garden With Bricks

The use of brick as a landscaping tool is only limited by the imagination of the designer. The use of brick in your landscape design can transform an unfinished garden into a tailored and groomed garden. Landscaping encompasses more than just your garden. It also includes the living spaces where your family gathers for meals and playtime in the backyard. Using brick to enhance your landscape will add a polished look to your landscape, blending patio and deck areas with the gardens. Does this Spark an idea?

                                            Edging

                                              Flat brick edging

Gardeners traditionally use edging bricks to outline the garden. This creates a finished look to the garden and helps keep mulch inside the garden. However, bricks can be placed in many more ways than simply on an edge. Try digging a shallow trench and tipping the bricks on end with one pointed edge pointed up. Stack the bricks one after another to benefit from the unique zigzag look created by this landscaping design.

No one ever said the edge of your garden needed a raised edging. Consider purchasing brick pavers to create a flat edge to the garden. Dig a wide, flat recessed area around the edge of your garden. Place the bricks or pavers flat on the ground side by side in a vertical pattern to delineate the garden's edge. Try placing two bricks horizontally, then two bricks vertically, etc., to create a unique looking pattern to your edging.

                                            Pathways Through the Garden

Most gardens divide the closed in space of a home from the expanse of a yard or swimming pool area. There's no better way to enjoy your garden that by creating a brick pathway right through the middle of your plantings, especially one that leads to a decorative bench seating area. This pathway can be wide or narrow, straight or meandering. Create intricate designs that you repeat with the bricks throughout the pathway. Brick walkways don't need to be continuous. You can easily create stepping stones out of flat bricks allowing a foot of space between each grouping.

                                            Retaining Walls and Terraces

                                              Brick and mortared retaining wall

Landscaping bricks come in a variety of colors and sizes. Choices should complement your exterior home colors and the overall decorating color scheme of your yard. Creating a retaining wall involves a little more work than edging or a walkway. However, you can create usable space from a slope or hillside by constructing a retaining wall. Space bricks with gaps in a pattern, add different color bricks for an interesting design or stack the bricks closely together to create the wall. A retaining wall doesn't need to be many feet high. It can involve simply two layers of bricks to delineate a section of a garden.

Creating a terrace or a raised section of a garden adds visual interest to your garden. Make a mini-garden within your larger garden by creating a fixed shape or free form terraced area using bricks. Level the area and start stacking bricks. Fill in with well-prepared soil and plant your showcase plants. Add mortar as you stack the plants to create a sturdy and long lasting garden terrace.

                                            Family Activities in the 1960s

                                            Family Activities in the 1960s

The 1960s were a decade of change and the American family was trying to keep up. Home floor plans were getting larger and eating around the table in a formal dining room followed by time in front of the TV in the family room was popular. Families gathered together for games and drives, too, and made sporting event -- whether watching or participating -- a part of their lives.

                                            Board Games

Creativity flourished in the 1960s with board games; electrical advances meant new games could utilize electrical wiring for game effects. One popular family game in the 60s was Operation, where players have to remove plastic bones from a game board "patient" without hitting the side of the hole the bone sat in. Twister, the classic game where you match your hand or foot to a color dot, became a popular family and party game after its introduction in 1966.

                                            Family Drives

Gas was affordable and more families than ever could afford assembly line-produced cars in the 60s. The United States was building miles of roads and family road trips became more popular than ever. "Sunday drive," where a family would take a leisurely drive through the countryside or other scenic location, was a common phrase in many Americans' vocabulary. Longer trips driving to state parks or the shore were also popular choices for vacationing families in the 60s. Another popular place to take the family car was the drive-in theater, where families could spend an inexpensive evening watching movies from inside their vehicles.

                                            Television

Like with cars, TVs were becoming more common in American households in the 1960s. Even though the first color TVs were introduced in the 1950s, most families still gathered around a black and white set in the 60s to watch news reports, presidential debates, progress on the civil rights movement and original dramas and comedies. Popular shows included The Flinstones, The Andy Griffith Show, Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres.

                                            Sports

Some baseball historians today call the 1960s baseball's "golden age," and many families either attended major or minor league games or played baseball in neighborhoods and leagues. Baseball continued to be the American pastime due to the league expansions that added more teams and allowed more families to go to games, the greats that became household names -- like Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Hank Aaron -- and the first televised baseball games in 1966. During the late 60s, football began to compete for Americans' attention span with the introduction of the Super Bowl and televised games the family could watch together in the evenings and weekends.
