Old-Fashioned Kids Games

Old-Fashioned Kids Games

There are a lot of reasons to encourage your child to play more old-fashioned style games. For one, they're usually cheaper, as at the time of their creation the children that made them didn't have expensive mass-produced toys. But even aside from that, psychologist Elena Bodrova says that the loss of the use of imagination in our children's play time has affected their cognitive skills.

Tag

This is the most obvious game to go on the list, and it is first because kids still play it today. What makes this game so good is how simple and basic the rules are. One player is "it" and must catch another player. That player is then "it," and the game continues. Variations include freeze tag, and it has been incorporated into variants of other games such as hide and seek.

Skipping Songs

Girls often sing skipping songs by themselves or with friends.
Girls often sing skipping songs by themselves or with friends.

Skipping songs are songs that children (usually girls) sing while skipping rope. Some of them were simply songs that did not involve participation, but some songs had rules. One example is a song in which the months of the year are called out, and players much jump out of the skipping line when their birth month is called. Another is the Cinderella song:

    "Cinderella dressed in yella,

Went upstairs to see her fella,

Made a mistake and kissed a snake,

How many doctors did it take?"

The players then count for as long as they manage to skip.

Hopscotch

This game has different rules depending on the variations being played. One common style of play is drawing a 10-square hopscotch board. Then throw a token, such as a rock, onto the board. Skip across, and then skip back, this time grabbing the rock. Scoring differs almost as much as style of play, but common rules are to add up the numbers of the squares the rock lands on or to simply call the player a winner if his token lands on the number 10.

Capture the Flag

This game is now commonly found in airsoft and paintball arenas as well as video games. The rules are fairly simple. There are two teams, and each team has its own flag (which might not be an actual flag). The goal is to get the other team's flag and return it to your team's base. There are additional rules depending on how complex a game the players are willing to play. These extra rules might include the ability to capture players or simply tag them out of the game.

House Building Games for Kids

House Building Games for Kids

Children can learn building skills through games with their play toys and real tools and building materials. A child's age will determine the advancement of building games.Children should understand the basic construct of building in order to participate in the act of building. Children will make connections on how things are built through their play with building materials.

Building Block House

Children will be proud of building a block house that stands sercurely.
Children will be proud of building a block house that stands sercurely.

Blocks can be used with younger children to promote understanding of the shape of a home. Children will have an idea of what a house will look like, and will use blocks to make a representation of that image. Building block houses can be a game if children have a goal of use of pieces or height of house. The game will focus on keeping balance and having a stable foundation for the block house.

Lego House

Legos will stay connected until taken apart by a child.
Legos will stay connected until taken apart by a child.

Houses built from Lego pieces will have more room for detail than a building block house. Lego pieces provide pieces to balance well through the connections to other pieces. Because Lego pieces connect to others directly, this will ensure stability in the houses. Lego pieces can provide the option for children to build insides of rooms. A game can be played by children to design specific features of a house.

Wooden Bird House

Although they may receive help, children will be proud of their construction.
Although they may receive help, children will be proud of their construction.

When a child can construct building block and Lego houses, they may be ready to use real tools to build a small wooden bird house. It will be necessary for supervision of the child for safety reasons. Instructions for a birdhouse can be given to a child before beginning construction. To make a wooden bird house, a child will need pieces of wood, a hammer and nails. This building game has directions that must to be followed in order and correctly.

Tree House

A tree house can be shown off and shared with others.
A tree house can be shown off and shared with others.

Building a tree house will provide a child with a future play area. But the first game they play in their tree house will be building it. Construction of a tree house will be advanced, and adult supervision and assistance will be needed for completion. Children can fit pieces of wood together just as if they were doing a puzzle. They will have to find the right size pieces to attach to each other to create a steady foundation and sturdy walls for their tree house.

Plans to Build an Outdoor Tiki Bar

Plans to Build an Outdoor Tiki Bar

Building an outdoor Tiki bar for your home is much easier than you would think. Home bar plans are available online and even at Lowe's. Tiki home dcor is fun to design and can be modified to adapt to winter months. A Tiki bar can serve food, fresh juices, and soft drinks as well as alcohol, making it a vacation destination for the whole family, without every having to leave home.

      Lowes

Lowes publishes a quarterly magazine called Lowes Creative Ideas for Woodworkers that has comprehensive details on home bar plans and other projects. They have published an article specifically about how to build Tiki bars, including a materials list and "how to" instructions. The Lowe's model is a bit like a Rocky Mountain Tiki bar with tin rather than a thatched roof and cedar to replace the bamboo. Even if you decide to use bamboo and thatch, use the basic plans of this version and you will find it easy to adapt and assemble.

      Adaptable Plans

For those who have already made a bar and really do not feel like making another, but would really like the entire Pacific Island effect, it's easy to build an outdoor Tiki bar. Adapt the bar that you already have, especially if for only one event, by adding simulated thatch to the roof and wrap the bar with bamboo trim or even the bamboo mats. With the basics in place, you can further dress the bar with additional Tiki home dcor like mini palms, brightly colored patio lights, solar-powered Tiki torches, bamboo furniture and brightly colored flowers. For an authentic look, add carved wooden Tiki masks and sculptures for effect.

      Indoor/Outdoor

Make your home bar plans adaptable and portable. In the summer months, you can place a 6 foot, homemade Tiki bar outside on the patio or deck, dress the roof with simulated thatch that will protect the roof structure and the bar itself, and wrap the base with bamboo mats. The bigger the size of the bamboo strung together in the mats, the more authentic the effect. You can paint a colorful Tiki design on the exterior rim of the bat and for an extremely effective Tiki look, either carve the posts supporting the thatch roof, or make them broad enough to hang carved masks from the Pacific Islands. A bar like this is small enough to pick up and move inside, especially when made with a detachable roof, and attractive enough to enhance your dcor.

      List of Common Garden Vegetables

      List of Common Garden Vegetables

Planning a vegetable gardening is a little intimidating when it comes time to draw up a list of seeds and plants to purchase. The new gardener will find the best way to decide what to plant is to list the common garden vegetables that are grown for fresh, cooked and preserved foods. The list is then adjusted to the personal tastes of the people the vegetable garden is being grown for. Does this Spark an idea?

      Brassica and Crucifers

The crunchy texture gives brassica and cruciferous vegetables a place on the common vegetable list as they are enjoyed in fresh salads and veggie snacks. Brassica vegetables include bok choy, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and turnip. Crucifers including radish, arugula and watercress. Brassica and crucifers are healthy, crunchy additions to salads and stir fry cooking.

      Umbelliferous and Root

The umbelliferous vegetables include carrots, parsnips and herbs such as dill, fennel, cilantro and parsley which add fiber and flavor to a variety of foods. Celery, a vegetable that crosses over into more than one family, is an umbelliferous member. The potato, one of the most common vegetables, is a member of the root family.

Leafy Green and Edible Plant Stem

Lettuce, spinach, kale and Swiss chard are iron-rich leafy greens that are commonly found planted in gardens. Leafy greens are also members of the composite vegetable family which include artichoke, Jerusalem artichoke and sunflower. Edible plant stems such as celery, celeriac and asparagus are common garden vegetables that are grown in home gardens.

      Legumes and Allium

Green beans, peas, chickpeas, carob, snow peas, broad beans and lentils are members of the legume family which provide high fiber content for meals and soups. The allium family is comprised of onions, shallots, leeks, garlic and chives which are essential for flavoring and add nutritional value to meals.

      Grass and Gourd

Grass vegetables include corn and bamboo shoots in the family of rice and grains. Pumpkin, squash, cucumber and zucchini are edible members of the gourd family. The meaty marrow of the gourd vegetables have a seed-rich interior.

How to Plan a Family Reunion

How to Plan a Family Reunion

Organize a memorable family reunion to renew lost contacts, introduce new ones and celebrate your heritage. Does this Spark an idea?

        Instructions

          1

Make a list of family members, including spouses, partners and children. Get contact information for all the people on your list.

          2

Choose a date when most people can attend. Summer months are often ideal, since children are out of school.

          3

Decide how long you want the reunion to last and where to have it. Hold it near most family members if you're clustered in one area. Pick a central location, if you're scattered.

          4

Develop a budget and decide how much each family will need to contribute. Avoid making costs prohibitively high.

          5

Visit reunion sites--such as hotels, inns and country clubs--and reserve one early.

          6

Determine the menu--perhaps one that celebrates your family's heritage. Find a caterer or restaurant that can supply food for the event.

          7

Appoint a family historian to take photographs or videos during the event.

          8

Plan social activities for the reunion--icebreaker games, sports, contests and talent shows. Include activities that will appeal to all ages. Buy prizes for your games or for distinctions such as oldest family member or longest distance traveled to attend.

          9

Send an initial mailing to gauge interest and preferences and to ask for help with planning. Send invitations later, with relevant information, directions and a map. Ask for a check from each family for its part of the reunion expenses.

How to Put Together a Sports Banquet

How to Put Together a Sports Banquet

A sports banquet can be held by school officials, community organizers and special event planners. These events are usually planned to honor contributions made by athletes and their mentors. Sports banquets can take place at the end of a season or follow the player roster announcement for athletic teams. Learn how to put together a sports banquet that includes a variety of activities based on one theme. Does this Spark an idea?

        Instructions

          1

Outline the central purpose for hosting a sports banquet before you start to plan it. Banquets can be setup as fancy award ceremonies, holiday parties, fundraisers or other special celebrations. Decide why you want to put together a sports banquet and then compare themes that fit around this objective. Informal sports banquet themes may consist of basic decorations such as balloons and take place in a gymnasium or park. The dress code for an informal sports banquet is usually casual for guests, allowing athletes to also wear their uniforms if they desire.

Formal sports banquet themes may be held at other locations including hotels and restaurants. Create a guest list that reflects your purpose for putting the sports banquet together. Some banquets include athletic teams from one or multiple sports along with their coaching department, family and friends. Determine all needs for a stage, lighting and sound system in advance. Some locations provide equipment when you rent their space, while others do not offer any extra items.

          2

Schedule all activities that will take place during the sports banquet in their order of appearance using one sheet of paper. Sports banquet activities can include award presentations, entertainment, guest speakers and video displays. Purchase trophies for award recipients if you plan to honor specific athletes, coaches or support staff as one of the activities. Confirm topics in advance with any guest speakers you invite to the banquet. Create an event program that lists your chosen activities using desktop publishing software and the sheet of paper as a reference.

Designate a specific amount of time in your event program for each activity, including guest speakers. Reserve enough time for your guests to dine and socialize in the program. You can schedule this to occur before any activities and then take photos before the closing speech is made. Print the finished event program on the cardstock or brochure paper. Print enough copies of the program to match the number of guests invited to your sports banquet.

          3

Contact a catering company to provide lunch or dinner during the sports banquet. Select a menu that includes a variety of entrees, side dishes and dessert. Request food donations from restaurants or culinary students if catering prices exceed your spending budget. Determine whether food will be distributed at tables by servers or made available to guests in a buffet setting. Additional staff members will be required if you choose to serve food to guests at each table.

How to Decrease Creatinine Levels in the Blood

Creatinine is actually a byproduct of creatine, which is a catalyst produced by the body to release stores of energy within muscle cells. The Mayo Clinic says that creatinine is not absorbed by the body, but is filtered out of your bloodstream through the kidneys to be eliminated within urine. Elevated creatinine levels may indicate muscle trauma because material that is normally within healthy cells is being released due to damage, or that your kidneys are not functioning properly to filter wastes. Take the proper steps to lead a healthy lifestyle and consequently, manage creatinine levels.

                  Instructions

                  Physical Examination

                    1

Schedule a consultation with a licensed medical professional to draw blood and perform laboratory analysis on your blood composition.

                    2

Inform your doctor beforehand of any cases of cardiovascular, neuromuscular, or kidney disease within your family history.

                    3

Avoid strenuous exercise prior to the blood test, so that your creatinine readings are not distorted.

                    4

The doctor will help you interpret the results, and may perform additional tests to arrive at a diagnosis.

                  Creatinine and Exercise

                    5

Avoid overexertion in the gym. The National Institutes of Health performed a 2002 study that documents evidence of football players reporting high creatine levels during rigorous two-a-day practices.

                    6

Use proper form according to your exercise routine to avoid accidents and injuries. Complete a stretching routine and a light jogging regimens prior to physical activity. Muscle tears and pulls release additional creatine and its creatinine byproduct into the bloodstream.

                    7

Avoid creatine and protein supplements if you are at risk for kidney failure. These supplements make your kidneys work harder to remove wastes.

                    8

Continue with moderate exercise. Do not stop exercising completely simply to reduce creatinine levels. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during your workout.

                  Prevention

                    9

Commit to healthy lifestyle changes that eliminate the risks of obesity and manage cardiovascular health. Doing so decreases the risks of complications from diabetes, kidney failure, and heart attacks, which are associated with high creatinine levels.

                    10

Reduce exposure to alcohol, tobacco, saturated fats, cholesterol, and refined sugars. These substances reduce your body's tolerance for exercise, slow metabolism, and lead to cardiovascular problems.

                    11

Eat healthy foods, such as fish, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and chicken breasts that are high in nutrients, relative to fat and simple carbohydrate content.

                    12

Exercise with strength training and aerobics to drop excess weight and improve blood flow. Kidney ailments and high creatinine levels sometimes occur because of poor circulation.

                  Treatment

                    13

If conditions merit, revisit your doctor after six months to one year following your lifestyle changes to perform another physical examination.

                    14

The doctor will coordinate a series of tests before arriving at another diagnosis, which will determine the cause of your high creatinine levels.

                    15

Your physician will order medication or even surgery in the event that cardiovascular problems cannot be corrected with diet and exercise alone. Excess weight and poor blood flow may cause diabetes and kidney disease if left untreated.

                    16

Special procedures and therapy are put in place to deal with chronic disease. Kidney failure and degenerative muscle ailments, such as multiple sclerosis, cause high creatinine levels and require extensive medical regimens to be managed.

Ideas for Senior's Night for Sports at High Schools

Ideas for Senior's Night for Sports at High Schools

Many high school sports teams host a "Senior Night" in which the team honors that year's seniors. These events typically involve every athlete on the team, and may include parents and faculty advisers. Popular Senior Night events include parties, dinners and movie celebrations. Some events include awards and speeches, while others focus on fun.

                    Senior Night Party

A party serves as an excellent Senior Night for any sports team. You can save money by hosting a party at your home, or you can have a more lavish party by renting a clubhouse or ballroom. Give the party a fun theme to allow students a chance to dress up -- and adults a chance to decorate. Possible themes include the Islands, Rock Stars, Disco and the '80s. Include snacks, such as fruit and cookies, and non-alcoholic drinks, such as punch or soda, so the athletes do not get hungry or thirsty. You can keep the party loose and informal, or include specific games such as charades.

                    Dinner

Some sports teams keep their Senior Night structured and easy to plan by having a dinner at a local restaurant. If you host your Senior Night at a restaurant, the restaurant takes care of food, drinks and decorations. Make reservations for your dinner, since many restaurants require advance notice for large groups of people. Allow students to see the menu before visiting the restaurant so that individuals with special diets can make appropriate accommodations. Expect to pay an extra fee for a private room or area. Additionally, some restaurants charge an extra gratuity for large parties.

                    Movie Night

Take athletes to a movie night to celebrate the end of the season or school year. Visit a local movie theater with seniors and purchase tickets and snacks for the athletes. If possible, watch a sports-related movie. Since most high school seniors are 17, you may be able to attend an R-rated movie, but you should ask parents for their permission first. Some teams enjoy going out for dinner or snacks after a movie. You may wish to take your team to an ice cream parlor or a coffee shop for refreshments.

                    Speeches

Some sports teams use their Senior Night as a chance to let seniors give speeches, sharing their experiences on the team and wishing the next batch of athletes good luck. If you include the tradition of speeches, give seniors a time limit of five to 10 minutes each, and lay down some ground rules for speeches, such as no profanity. Allow all the seniors to give a short speech each, or give seniors a chance to volunteer for a limited number of speaking slots -- maybe five speeches total.

                    Awards

If you feel certain members of the team deserve special recognition, hand out awards at your senior night. You may give a personalized award to every athlete with messages such as "Most Likely to Kick Butt" or "Best Catcher." Give out traditional awards such as "Most Valuable Player" or "Team Favorite." Try to include everyone in the awards by giving out small tokens of appreciation such as gift certificates, candy or memorabilia.

How to Teach Locomotor Skills to Children

How to Teach Locomotor Skills to Children

Locomotor skills are the basic foundation of human movement. They include walking, running, skipping, hopping, galloping, leaping, jumping and sliding. By extension, both throwing and dribbling skills may be included under the locomotor label. Most children are ready to practice walking around 12 months, running/hopping/jumping at 24 months and galloping/sliding/skipping at 36 months. Proficiency in these areas is critical to developing a confident and agile child. Fortunately, the movements often come naturally to children and can be incorporated into the context of play. The key to teaching locomotor skills is proper modeling and repeated guided practice. The steps below explain the basic process of introducing and reinforcing all locomotor skills with children.

                    Instructions

                    Directions

                      1

Begin by teaching one skill at a time, starting with a basic movement (such as jumping) before moving on to other more difficult skills (such as skipping). Model the chosen action first, using narration to explain what you are doing. Be clear in the way that one motion differs from another. For example, when showing children how to jump, you might say, "Last time we practiced, we did hopping. We took small little hops, like this. Today, we're going to try jumping. Watch as I show you how to JUMP. I'm going to put both feet together and make a big jump, landing with my feet together. Notice how my jump was bigger than my hop, but not so big that I lost my balance and fell. Watch again. One, two, three ... jump! One, two, three ... jump! One, two, three ... jump!"

                      2

Provide guided practice for the skill by performing the action with children, again narrating the movement and encouraging children to chant along with you. You could say, "Now it's your turn. Put your feet together, just like mine. We'll count to three, then we'll take a small jump and each land with our feet together. Ready? One, two, three ... jump!" If a child struggles to maintain balance or focus on the desired movement, try holding his hand.

                      3

Give feedback on each child's execution of the motion, and provide continued guided practice. You may comment, "That was an excellent jumping movement! This time when you try it, remember to land with your feet together. Watch as I do it. One, two, three ... jump! Can you see how my feet look? Now you try with me. One, two, three ... jump! That's it! You landed with your feet together! Let's try again." Continue practicing, and provide feedback to build the children's confidence and correct errors.

                      4

Provide regular, ongoing practice and frequently review the previously taught skills. To maintain the children's interest, incorporate games into locomotor practice whenever possible. For instance, introduce a signal (such as a bell or whistle) to indicate when children should begin and end a particular motion. ("When you hear the bell, I want you to skip. When you hear the bell again, freeze.") "Simon Says" is another fun and easy way to have students demonstrate particular motions. Another way to add interest to locomotor practice is with the use of beanbags. Spread a number of different colored beanbags around the room, and give directions for children to move to each beanbag. ("Leap to the red beanbag. Now gallop to the blue beanbag.") You could even have children toss the beanbags themselves, then use various movements to retrieve them. ("Slide over to get your beanbag, then run back to the starting place.")

                    India Games for Kids

                    India Games for Kids

According to the Central Intelligence Agency, India is the second most populous nation in the entire world as of 2010. Of that population, about 30 percent are kids who are 14 years old or younger. These young people play games that have been traditions in India for centuries. These games have endured because they require very little equipment, have only a few rules and don't take a long time to play.

                    Latoo

Latoo is a traditional game that involves tops. The tops have a pointed end on which they can spin. These tops, or latoos, come with a string. The player throws the latoo down on the ground and yanks on the string to get the latoo to spin. This requires some skill on the player's part, since a latoo that isn't tossed or yanked properly may break or start to spin off balance. The player whose latoo spins the longest wins the game. Indian children consider this a street game. There is no limit to how many people can play at a time, but there needs to be enough room in the area of play to let each player spin his latoo freely. Children sometimes play this game in tournaments.

                    Kokla Chappakki

Kokla Chappakki is a party and outdoor game similar to the American version of Duck Duck Goose. There must be a minimum of six players. All of the players sit in a circle, with one player (the Danner) standing up with a scarf. The players sing a short song about writing a letter several times through. Everyone in the circle keeps their eyes closed during the singing. At the end of the singing, the Danner drops the scarf behind someone in the circle, and everyone opens their eyes to see if the scarf is behind them. The player that has the scarf behind him gets up and chases the Danner around the circle. The Danner is "out" if he can't run around the circle fast enough to sit in the chaser's seat before the chaser catches him.

                    Kabaddi

Kabaddi is a game similar to tag that is played in teams. Each team must have at least five players, but there really is no limit to how many people may be on a team. One player from one team crosses the line that divides the team. The player who crosses the line chants "Kabaddi" over and over again for as long as he can with one breath. As he runs and chants, he tries to "kill" at least one member of the opposing team by touching them. Members from the team he is challenging may try to "kill" him in the same way. When he has "killed" a member of the opposing team or run out of air, he crosses back to his side. Then another player from the first chanter's team goes out across the line and takes a turn at chanting and tagging. Play continues until all members of one team are "killed."

Liven up your camping trips and family reunions with this full BlongoBall set. Appropriate for use both outdoors and indoors, BlongoBall combines elements from bocce, horseshoes, croquet, and other lawn sports, but adds a unique twist: rather than throwing a ball or a shoe, you throw a BlongoBall, which is technically two small spheres connected by a thin stretch of rope. The goal is to wrap your BlongoBall around one of the horizontal bars of the BlonGoal, which stands 25 feet away (or less if kids are playing). Players score one, two, or three points with a successful throw, depending on which bar the BlongoBall grabs. And the game ends when one person or team reaches 21 points exactly. You can even add a bit of defensive strategy to the game by trying to knock your opponent's BlongoBalls off the bars.

BlongoBall is fun for kids and families, but it's also great for physical education classes, teambuilding games, or even as a rehab tool in a therapy setting. The BlongoBall set comes with two BlonGoals and two sets of BlongoBalls. Players can also purchase such accessories as extra BlongoBalls, a carrying bag, and a portable score tower.

                      About BlongoBall
Mike Long and his wife, Roberta, were early retirees who spent much of their time fishing, hunting, rafting, boating, and RVing. When Mike was introduced to the rudimentary concept of BlongoBall, he decided that the game merited serious development and investigation. Mike built the prototype game and used all of his friends as test subjects. BlongoBall was tested on the beaches of Lake Powell, on raft trips on the Salmon River, on the beaches of San Diego, and in parks and campgrounds form the southwest to the northwest. In every location, passersby would stop and interrupt the games to find out where they could buy BlongoBall. The enthusiastic response encouraged Mike to continue to refine the rules and goal configurations.

After months of design, research and testing, Mike applied for and received a patent for BlongoBall, which has been enthusiastically received by kids and adults of all ages since its release. Founded in 2004, BlongoBall is located in Spokane, Washington.

                      Layout of Vegetable Garden Plan

                      Layout of Vegetable Garden Plan

A well-planned vegetable garden can increase yields and reduce the amount of work required in maintaining it. A few general caveats should help your vegetable garden remain healthy and productive. Does this Spark an idea?

                      Garden Location

The first part of designing the layout of your garden is to select a good general location. An ideal vegetable garden location will have full sun most of the day. If that isn't possible, select a location that gets the most sun possible. The garden will also have to have water for irrigation and be protected from animals that could trample the sprouting plants or eat the vegetables before their harvest. If no natural protection is available, simple wire fencing will work well.

                      Garden Type

The next thing to decide when planning your garden is the type of garden you want. If you opt for an intensive gardening method, where seeds are over-planted and the weaker seeds culled as the plants sprout, either a ground-based garden or raised bed will work. For this type of garden, the garden area is divided into 2- to 4-foot squares. Make sure to leave enough space to get into the patches for weeding and harvesting. Each square is over-planted with seeds. Plant more seeds than the square can support, and either eat the young plants, as in the case of carrots, or cull the weaker plants, as in the case of tomatoes or peppers. If you are planning on doing very little culling, intensive gardening can produce very good yields with proper fertilization.

The other garden type to consider is a traditional rowed garden, where vegetables are planted in rows. Leave enough space between the rows to allow easy access for weeding and harvesting.

                      Plant Heights

Whatever type of garden you plant, make sure to plant the vegetables so that lower growing plants have enough sunlight. For example, if you plant corn, place the corn so it doesn't shade the carrots or jalapenos as the corn grows. If your plot gets more sun in the morning, plant tall crops like corn in the west. This will allow the lower growing plants adequate sunshine. Conversely, if your plot gets better afternoon sun, plant the tall plants in the east.

Roomy enough for a small family, the Coleman Sundome 4 tent sleeps up to four people at a time in complete comfort. The Sundome 4 is outfitted with Coleman's exclusive WeatherTec system, a series of technical features intended to protect you from inclement weather and nasty storms.

The tent's interior measures 63 square feet--enough for up to four people. WeatherTec tents are built with a coated polyester fabric combined with anti-wicking thread, webbing, and zippers, all designed to keep you dry when the rain comes down. The tent's welded waterproof floor and inverted floor seams, meanwhile, dramatically increase the water resistance by hiding the needle holes inside the tent and away from the elements. In fact, Coleman is so confident in its WeatherTec system that it exposes its WeatherTec tents to a rain room that simulates nasty downpours, and to a wind machine capable of blowing hurricane force gusts. The results? Even after the tests, Coleman guarantees its WeatherTec tents will keep you dry.

The Sundome 4's interior is spacious, with a base that measures 9 feet by 7 feet and a center height of 59 inches--plenty of headroom for most people. In addition, the dome-style tent is engineered to keep you cool thanks to the adjustable Variflo ventilation and vented Cool-Air port. Best of all for travel-weary campers, the Sundome 4 sets up quickly, with two shock-corded steel poles, continuous pole sleeves, a pin-and-ring design, and InstaClip attachments. Other details include a rain fly; an electrical access port; a privacy vent window; an interior gear pocket; separate bags for the tent, poles, and stakes; and easy-to-follow instructions sewn into the durable carrying bag.

                          About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure.

The Pros & Cons of School Sports

The Pros & Cons of School Sports

Every year, parents and educators debate the pros and cons of school sports. Proponents say school sports provide an outlet for students to grow and develop physically, mentally and emotionally. But potential dangers -- such as long-term injuries and the use of performance enhancing drugs -- can arise without proper guidance and balance of athletics and academics.

                          Personal Development

Sports can help student athletes learn skills that can help them become successful on and off the playing field. According to "The Benefits of Youth Sports" by Metzl and Shookhoff, athletes learn to sacrifice immediate gratification for long-term gain. Competitive athletics helps students become more responsible, self-motivated and disciplined. Skills -- such as resilience, attitude control and time management -- are also learned and developed.

                          Physical Fitness

Typically, students who participate in school sports lead healthier, more active lifestyles. Many students are exposed to avenues of entertainment -- TV, video games, movies and other forms of media -- that possibly encourage laziness and can result in obesity. Additionally, the chemical makeup and hormones of teenagers are constantly in flux. Exercise and kinesthetic activities assist the body's production of endorphins and adrenaline. These chemicals help increase mood stability and positive feelings of happiness.

                          College Preparation

School sports can help students when they apply to go to college. Many colleges and universities review an applicant's full transcript. This includes grades, courses, test scores and extracurricular activities such as athletics. Participation in school sports shows the student has the ability to manage academics with other responsibilities. The chance of admission into college might also be enhanced through athletics. Many schools offer athletic scholarships to students with significant athletic skills and abilities.

                          Potential Cons

There are also potential cons associated with school sports. Sports can sometimes take precedence over academics. For example, exceptional student-athletes sometimes focus primarily on athletics. This can be detrimental to learning and academics. Competing in school sports can also put unnecessary pressure on students to win and be the best. Performing poorly in games or matches might negatively impact a student's self-esteem. Athletes looking for an edge over the competition might also fall prey to performance enhancing drugs or steroids. There is also the possibility of long-term injuries. Joints, ligaments and muscles continue to grow throughout high school. Overuse during growth spurts can cause problems in joints and tendons such as arthritis.

How to Play a Family Feud Game

How to Play a Family Feud Game

Family Feud is an engaging game to play at Thanksgiving, Christmas or any time you have 10 or more family members gathered together for a party. Your family will laugh at the goofy answers and learn even more about each other through this game. Putting the game together takes a little bit of time, but is not complicated.

                          Instructions

                            1

Gather together nine Family Feud-style questions, answers and how many people gave each answer. Four of those questions will be used for regular round, and five questions will be used for the "fast money" round. Pay attention to how many people gave each answer so you will be able to keep track of the points. Gather the questions and answers by watching the game on TV and writing them down or by using the online game.

                            2

Write the answers on one side of the poster board and the points that correspond to each next to them. One poster board is used for each round except fast money. Keep the questions written on your note cards.

                            3

Cut out strips from the colored poster board to cover up the answers written on the white poster board. Tape the colored pieces or staple them over the answers so no one can see them, but so that you can easily rip off the strip when the person calls out the right answer.

                            4

Write out the "fast money" questions and answers on the note cards only. You can just tell the group members how many points they got for their answers and add them up.

                            5

Note the points for each round. Rounds one and two count normally. In round three, double the points. In round four, triple the points. The team with the most points at the end of round four wins.

                            6

Select an outgoing member of the family to serve as "host," who will ask the questions and keep the game moving along. You may want to do this yourself, since you are familiar with the questions and rules. Select another person to serve as official scorekeeper.

                            7

Explain the rules of the game. Assemble two teams of five players each. One player from each team comes up to the podium at a time and whoever gets the highest point answer gets to pass or play. Each team gets three strikes before the other team is given a chance to steal. The team with the most points at the end of round four gets to go to the next round

                            8

Play the "fast money" round. Two players are chosen from the five on the team to play and one must be sent to another room where he cannot hear the answers given by the first player. If the two players together earn 200 points, they win.

                            9

Hand out prizes. These prizes don't have to be anything expensive. Simple fake medals or other toys or little items with family significance.

                          Family Life in Modern China

Traditionally, Chinese family life was very strict, structured and patriarchal. In the post Maoist China, family life has moved toward a more typically Western, nuclear style. Life is less restrictive for all members of the family. Despite these changes, modern Chinese families still retain some traditional values such as respect and helpfulness for elders.

                          Family Structure

There are four typical family structures in China. These are the nuclear, linear, joint and other. Nuclear families consist of either the couple and their child(ren) or simply the couple. Linear families are comprised of the parents along with their grown children who care for them. Joint families are couples living with their parents and in laws. Other types include single persons, one parent and others.

                          Changes from the Past

Changes in family structure have occurred in modern China, specifically in the era following the Maoist regime. Nuclear families have become more common. This is due to modernization as well as other social factors.

                          Children

In 1979, China implemented the policy of one child per family. The rationale for this was that a too-large population would hinder progress as well as put a strain on public services. It should be noted that this limit is not absolute. In rural areas, if a couple's first child is a girl, they are allowed to have another child due to male children being favored.

                          Impacts of Changes

With the nuclear structure and lower number of children, family life has changed considerably. Parents have more time to spend raising their children as they are not caring for older relatives. Also, while Chinese society in general does not have the gender equality of the West, men and women in families are much more equal than in the past, particularly in the cities.

                          General

Though children are still expected to be obedient to their elders, modern Chinese children enjoy greater freedom than in the past. Parents expect that children will excel in school, but are more lenient with allowing children to choose careers, leisure activities and romantic partners.

How to Make a Vegetable Garden

There's something about that bite of a green-market tomato that makes you determined to grow your own! Growing your own vegetables seems almost like performing magic--they come up looking like the vegetables in the catalog, but no catalog can describe the taste of homegrown lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and squash. Even if you're a new gardener, growing vegetables is great fun. This article will give you some ideas for a manageable start, on which you can build as you grow more confident. Does this Spark an idea?

                          Instructions

How to make a vegetable garden

                            1

Begin in the autumn. Yes, work on your garden begins early. Find a sunny patch of yard. Full sun, which vegetables need, is defined as six or more hours of sun per day.

                            2

Cover your new plot with plastic mulch-cloth, sheet-plastic, or a thick layer of newspapers, all anchored down with bricks, rocks or short pieces of lumber. Fall mulching inhibits further grass-growth and will make it easier for you to remove turf and dig your vegetable garden.

                            3

Make a rough plan on paper. Measure your new bed, and set the vegetables apart with plenty of room for each vegetable. Remember also that your plants will grow. As much as you may want your tomato plants front-row-center to be admired, they will become big enough to shade bean-plants.

                            4

Once soil is completely thawed and no longer soaked with water, you can begin planting early crops: spinach, lettuce, peas, and cabbage. You can sow seeds for root crops like carrots or beets.

                            5

Weed, water, and pick your vegetables as they grow for optimal plant health.

                            6

Once weather and soil are warmer, you're ready to put in summer vegetables. Seedlings and small plants make better sense than sowing seeds unless your summers are consistently long and hot. Be sure to always keep on top of weeding and watering, both of which are now serious concerns.

                            7

As your garden comes into full growth, take one more look at your plan and make the changes you think necessary for next year's garden. This is the best time to revise your plan because you can see your plants at full size.

                            8

                            Harvest, eat and enjoy!

How to Choose Which Colors to Wear in Family Portraits

How to Choose Which Colors to Wear in Family Portraits

As far as memories go, nothing is more important than a great family portrait. You want yourself and your family to look as good as possible because this is a photo that will be displayed and handed down for generations. Clothing and color is important to a good photo. Here are some steps to help you make the right choices. Does this Spark an idea?

                          Instructions

                          Dressing For Your Family Portrait

                            1

Ask your photographer, when you are making the appointment for the portrait, what color background he will be using if any. If he will be photographing your family in front of a backdrop you'll want to stay clear of wearing that color so that you stand out and not blend in.

                            2

If you have a dark complexion you'll want to stay away from white and other very light colors. If you don't, your clothes will end up looking washed out and your faces will be too dark. It's better not to go with such a high contrast between your clothes and your skin.

                            3

Choose similar colors for the entire group. Sometimes colors can clash and there is more likelihood of this occurring if everyone is wearing something completely different.

                            4

Stay away from wild colors and patterns as these can be distracting. When people look at the photo you want the first thing they see to be your smiling faces and not the striped polka dotted shirt you wore.

                            5

Pick a standard safe color that your whole family will be comfortable wearing. The more comfortable you are the more relaxed and natural you will all look. Suggested colors are blues, greens, mild purples and reds.

                          Family Planning Methods for Men

                          Family Planning Methods for Men

Men may choose their own contraceptive method for a variety of reasons, but perhaps none more important than relieving themselves of the emotional and financial burden unwanted pregnancies bring.

Family planning methods for men either prevent sperm from leaving a man's body, block it from entering a woman's body, or render sperm immotile or interfere with its ability to fertilize an egg.

                          Abstinence

Abstinence is the least invasive and one of the most effective methods of birth control. But not everyone can maintain this practice. The problems lack of sexual contact can cause a relationship concerning intimacy and happiness are barriers to the success of this strategy.

                          Condoms

Condoms act as a physical barrier between sperm and the woman's reproductive organs. Condoms can tear and carry an average 14 percent failure rate. Because the condom sheaths the entire penis, one of the chief complaints concerning its use is a reported lack of sensation.

Caution also must be taken in handling the used condom to prevent transmitting sperm from the condom, or objects in contact with the condom, to the woman's genital area.

                          The Pill

The most promising combination currently in development for a male contraceptive pill involves either the synthetic hormone desogestrel, or gestagen, along with testosterone. During trials, sperm counts have been found to drop to zero, making the pill more effective than almost any other form of contraception.

It carries almost no side effects, with only minor weight gain reported in a small number of men for the desogestrel version. There have been reports of reversible shrinkage of the testicles in the gestagen combination.

The biggest drawback to this method is the need to take a daily pill. Research is underway on an implanted version, as well as a cream and patch.

Cost is expected to be equivalent to that of condoms. The results are reversible, but the drop in sperm count may take from a few weeks to four months to occur.

                          IVD

An Intra Vas Device is a series of silicone plugs, sutured to the wall of the vas deferens, the passageway of the system that carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra. The device was designed to stop sperm from passing outside the body. The effects take place relatively quickly, within a few ejaculations.

Setbacks in development have included leakage as the vas deferens duct expands around the plugs. While the sperm count achieved is low enough to be considered infertile and the escaping sperm were rendered mostly immotile, increasing the number and size of the plugs are being considered to better these results.

This method is preferable for those who wish to avoid more invasive methods of contraception. It is easy to reverse; however, damage from pressure, which may affect future fertility, is a concern. The potential for this increases with the length of time the plugs are in place.

                          RISUG (SMA)

Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance uses a polymer in part to physically block the vas deferens passage, but through charges present on the surface, it also renders sperm immotile.

There is less concern about leakage, so a smaller amount of material can be used than with plugs and there are fewer concerns with pressure or its resulting damage.

This method is almost immediately effective, reversible and considered minimally invasive, as it is accomplished through an injection. Reversal is slightly more invasive.

                          Chemical Sterilization

Chemical sterilization is a mildly invasive procedure where an injection introduces chemicals into the vas deferens. The resulting scarring prevents sperm from passing from a man's body.

Drawbacks to this method include a waiting period of several months for its effects to be realized. This form of sterilization is on par with the vasectomy in rates of reversal because of the unpredictable amount of scarring.

                          Vasectomy

Vasectomy remains one of the most invasive forms of male contraception, despite much progress over the history of the surgery. While the procedure is considered a minor surgery and done on an outpatient basis, it involves cutting, cauterizing and suturing of the vas deferens. The failure rate is considered to be low.

The biggest drawback for most men is mental or emotional trauma and the effect on their perception of manhood. After a vasectomy, sperm is eventually seen as an invader and the body will begin to form antibodies against it. This can lead to blockages or ruptures in some cases.

Vasectomy has a better rate of reversal with advances in microsurgery, however reversal is expensive and may not restore fertility.

How to Make a Family Tree for School

How to Make a Family Tree for School

A family tree project helps a child map out the members of his family. This is a chance to learn about the generations of the family she has been born or adopted into. It helps give him a sense of belonging. You can use a drawing or photo of a tree to help the child understand that a family starts with roots and branches out as each generation causes it to grow.

                          Instructions

                            1

Draw, photocopy or purchase a picture of a large tree with full branches. Tape it to the center of the paper or poster board you have chosen.

                            2

Write the names of great-grandparents in the roots of the tree. Fill the left side in for the paternal side of the family and the maternal on the right side of the tree. Write in their wedding dates if you know them.

                            3

Write the names of the grandparents on the trunk of the tree and add their wedding dates if you know them. Keep the maternal grandparents on the right side of the tree and the paternal on the left side.

                            4

Write the names of the parents, aunts and uncles on the heavy limbs of the tree corresponding to their sides of the family. Add in their dates of births, if possible. Center the names and wedding date of the student's parents at the top of the tree.

                            5

Draw lines at the edges of the greenery on the tree, using a ruler as a guide. Write in the birth dates of the student and any siblings near the branch the parents names are recorded on. If the child is adopted, you might want to add the adoption date, too.

                            6

Add the names of cousins in the outer leaves of the branches where the aunts and uncles are written down.

There are a variety of board games geared for children ages 3 to 5. Classic games such as Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land have been enjoyed by generations of youngsters. Newer games include Sequence For Kids and Scrabble Jr. Card games such as Go Fish and Old Maid are easy to carry around and can be played whenever the time is right.

Not every game played in the house has to take place at a table. Children can have fun playing red light, green light and hide and seek indoors. Imagination-based games also are appropriate for younger children. Charades, 20 Questions, I Spy and playing pretend all stimulate creativity and can be played indoors.

                          Outdoor Games

Turning children loose outside allows them to let their wild side free and burns off excess energy. If you have a group of kids, organize sport games such as soccer, t-ball and relay races. They can also play tag, hopscotch, and follow the leader. Just letting them follow their imagination can lead to a wide assortment of games. Let them act like animals or pretend they are on an adventure.

                          How to Resolve Family Conflicts

Conflicts arise in every family. Sometimes, conflicts are small and are resolved within a matter of minutes. Follow these steps to learn more.

                          Instructions

                            1

Identify the problem. Tell your family what the problem is clearly and calmly. Pay attention to your tone of voice and the words you choose to express your feelings.

                            2

Discuss the problem. Everyone involved should participate in the conversation.

                            3

Listen with an open mind. This will help you to understand the situation as a whole.

                            4

Take a break. If the discussion gets heated and is beginning to escalate into an argument, walk away to cool off so everyone can come back to the discussion with calm, open minds.

                            5

Come up with a solution. Collectively decide and agree upon what the best solutions are to the problem.

                            6

Put your solution into practice. Simply creating a solution does not resolve the conflict. You have to act upon a solution in order for the conflict to come to a resolution.

How to Make Chicken and Gnocchi Soup - Just Like Olive Garden

Olive Garden's chicken and gnocchi is a rich, thick soup that can serve as a full meal. Many of the copycat recipes on the Internet suggest using the potato gnocchi sold in stores, though it's possible to make your own. It's also possible to use turkey instead of chicken in this recipe. Add this to my Recipe Box.

                            Instructions

                              1

Prepare the gnocchi according to the package instructions.

                              2

Saut the onion, celery, garlic, spinach, carrots in the olive oil till the onion is nearly translucent.

                              3

Add the chicken, chicken broth, and spices and bring the mix to a boil.

                              4

Slowly add the gnocchi to the boiling broth.

                              5

Turn down the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. For a thick soup, add 1 tbsp. of corn starch to the cream before you add it into the broth. Add the cream, then slowly allow the mixture to come to a boil again.

                              6

Serve the soup in heated bowls.
